Growth issues
During my time as I built my tower in Plains since Mistlands are empty. I took over Furling Tower. In the distance there was tar pit. I rebuilt the tower. At random times I was getting from 1 to 3 growths that attack me. They leave the lox alone but go after the furlings. Their poison/tar effect kills me as the volley it. I have earthen walls up but getting annoying by jump and shooting at the same time, which makes it hard to shoot with a bow. I can understand if I mined a lot to draw them, but build items not that in making noise. I notice they have very large aggro area is that common?

Fire arrows, shoot from a distance. They're dead in seconds. :) If they get too close, frost arrows slows them down so you can get some distance between you again.

Not as much as you'd think. Seems like creatures in Valheim would rather fight each other than fight you. One way I like to lure one to the other is with the bow. For example, If there's a goblin village and tarpit nearby, if I position myself so the tarpit is between me and the village, I'll fire a few arrows into the village. They'll come to investigate and run into tarpit and fight it out with the growths till someone wins. By that time I'm either long gone or picking off enemies from a distance and thinning the herd. Thanks everyone for the info...I thought about trying to lure them close to gob village but felt it would be death run.

That's just it... the campfire doesn't need to be lit. They seem to be ignored unlike workbenches. You don't need workbenches. A campfire will do just fine and they won't be attacked.
I like build my main base in the Plains over a Fuling Village I've cleared. There's usually a tar pit nearby. A workbench is perfect for it, I don't have to worry about keeping a fire going.

Growths succumb to frost arrows and spirit damage from the silver sword. If you have the poison resistance their spew will incur percussion damage only. And as others have stated, drain the pit to get the tar blobs and circle the pit with workbenches. However, if you have lox in the area those workbenches will probably get stomped and need to be re-built.

You don't need workbenches. A campfire will do just fine and they won't be attacked. Frost arrows are good for slowing Growths. You don't really need anything special to kill them. They don't come in starred varieties and they don't have a lot of health. Killing them is no different than killing a blob in the Swamp.

I do the same but they are weak to fire so I use flaming arrows. Roll out of the way and fire, repeat. Takes about 3 fire arrows to kill a growth. You don't even need poison resistance. Its possible to dodge all of their projectile attacks. The most effective way for me to fight growths is to wait for them to start shooting, then dodge sideways to evade them. I then run in using their recovery down time to kill them quickly. They're completely helpless during that (very) short time.
You also can prevent them from spawning again, by just placing a camp fire right at the border of the tar pit.

FYI, Growths will respawn even from a drained Tarpit. There can be up to 7 in a fresh one but after you kill those, I've only seen them spawn in pairs.
For dealing with Growths:
1. If there are more than two, do not directly attack. Use your bow from a distance and try to get a height advantage or leave them alone. You can also try to lure any Lox in the area over to the pit and have them fight it out. Growths hate everything.
2. Like electricdawn said above, circle around them or strafe to the side when they shoot the tar gobs at you. They will miss. When the attack is over, rush the Growth and kill it.
If you're fighting 1 on 1 and you get tarred, do NOT run away, press the attack and kill the Growth, do not allow it time to attack you again.
Great advice for the OP

Like Warchild said, they do have a large aggro range.
Do what I do, I kill the Growths then set up a workbench at the edge of the tar pit. This will prevent growth re-spawns. You might have to replace it now and then if it gets destroyed in a raid.

In my experience, Growth do have a large aggro radius, but they're easy to fight, particularly with a poison resistance mead, or Root Mask.
