There are some Mistland areas too but they're undeveloped in terms of content. Basically just placeholder areas.

No updates yet to the future biomes. The next major update after H&H will be for Mistlands. Between now and then there should be regular smaller content patches. (As per the Fireside Chat video).
I'd expect things to go quicker as they've hammered out the vast majority of bugs and expanded the dev team.

Great. So If I start a new game now I should be able to continue it when Mistlands is ready

Just bear in mind that currently the devs are saying anything you've gone in 500m of is set in stone and won't change with updates, and there is no guarantee a future update won't have content that requires a new map, just part of Early Access.

I believe I heard they're adding some things to the plains but don't quote me on that

Das is true, as to what though the developers did not say as to keep it fun for us to find out.

Referring to the op, developers said biomes are being later brought in as giving a new boss and enemies would majorly upset what they already have and is why they have spent this update getting all the foundations ready for new enemies and bosses.

they have been there all along. you can also mine fire ore, but not use it for anything yet
