Does my character stink?

While in sneak mode I am in 'Black Forest' hiding unmoving behind a large rock. A troll slowly wanders into the scene as my camera viewpoint can see him but no line-of-sight between us. Suddenly his nose twitches and he turns and starts coming directly toward my position.

This has happened at least 3 times to me. Do trolls have a sense of smell?

Also, wind direction while sneaking actually matters. Which is cool.

Freakin' seriously?, so that's the reason stuff just runs away for no reason while i'm sneaking. Learned something new.

It's actually not true. Wind has nothing to do with the stealth mechanic.

Some creatures can smell you if they are downwind from you, which is why it's important to pay attention to the particle effects in the air.

Also increasing your sneak skill and equipping troll armor will help.

I don't think wind direction matters while sneaking. It's not that complex of a system. Each creature has a different "detection radius", which I suppose you could imagine includes smell, but it's just a simple cone that can be narrow or very wide depending on the creature. Your sneak skill shrinks the size of this cone, that's it. If you're in the cone, you're spotted. If not, you're good.

The only other factor is light, which is what the bar indicates. If it's bright, your sneak skill is significantly reduced. If it's dark, it's increased.

Basically the trolls turn because their pattern is to wander around in every direction, and when they do, you end up in their detection cone. That's all there is to it.
