He means how long from the time your ship sank and you drowned to when you went back to retrieve what you could? Same thing happened to me, I went back immediately, got my tombstone then found my cargo floating around and got them. I was close enough to land that I swam (I didn't get my nails, had to re-make them). If you wait a game day or two, your cargo might despawn.

oh well i tried to take back my cargo and stuff for 5 days+

Depends, the materials to build the ship stay around for a while before despawning, albeit the nails sink to the bottom and can be tricky to retrieve if they are in deep water. Any cargo should float in cargo boxes where the boat sank.
