Base defence tips *No dirt walls and trenches*

I've been looking around a bit to find such a guide and didn't find one. I'll try and give it a shot and update with your ideas.

This guide will not cover dirt walls and trenches as it has been talked about a lot already. No talking about making an elevated base out of reach either.

It is generally a good idea go go out as soon as possible to have ennemies focus on you instead of your structures.

Have an emergency raid equipment chest with armor, weapons, foods and mead.

It is better to do a 1x1 stone wall around your base than using 4x2 walls. This is because both have the same HP and doing it with smaller parts will help distribute the damage over a larger area.

You can use 1x1 stone blocks to help force mobs into a path, trolls could not step over it during my tests.

You could place beehouses along that path, they will help damage ennemies along the way.
If you're making multiple layers of wall around your base, they should be spaced out because some ennemies attacks reach trough objects, destroying both at the same time.

Using decoy workbenches to gain some time to prepare to go out

you can have strategically placed holes in your wall to shoot arrows from ground level.

Having watchtowers inside your defence perimeter is always a good idea.

Tamed wolves inside your defences can sometimes attack your walls to get to the ennemies

Things to test out:

Using fire to divert greylings to spiked areas, does it works during raids?

Mobs will attack the door so place murder hole outcroppings along the side of the door where you can sit and kill them. Works for anything but Drakes and Trolls. Place a column so you can duck back from archers.

Islands are cool unless very small where trolls still walk in deep water, greys will swim and still throw rocks. Also wolf defense will spend time swimming to target and get hit before doing much of anything.

I tame wolves, breed them, and stick extra outside the walls. Many die each event, but they kill a lot and distract enemies from attacking the base.

Plant trees so densely that the enemy pathing goes all screwy, especially trolls & large creatures. Works well when you combine this with a raised grounded area, built on top, & spread out your work stations & crafting buildings strategically around your base for your build- some of them are able to block spawns all together.

This helps too, so much. I did the same thing on a large meadows/black forest island Mine are a bit out of control at the moment though, won't help with lag at all, but they breed & self sustain off the lower tier mobs that spawn 24/7.

In truth, all you need is to blanket the entire of your home, and surrounding chunks with workbenches/wards
If the entirety of the active chunks are unspawnable, then no mobs will spawn.

If you then leave/enter only via portal, no neighbouring chunks will ever be loaded, preventing mobs creeping in with you.
A fortress without walls.

Obviously blocking flying mobs is a little more tedious (especially with the default workbench/ward radius).

Building on islands is good but my go-to is always building everything on raised platforms. That way I control the access points and enemy approach based on where the stairs are, and stairs that don't quite connect are perfectly usable for players but incomprehensible to AI pathfinding.

Those are nice tips, more or less already known by many (e.g. drawing inspiration from real world), but still useful to aggregate in one place.

Spikes are worthless -angriff
- If enemies don't attack the beehives, bees won't attack. But you can trigger them by launching a single wooden arrow from a distance. And I don't remember that mobs think about retaliating (only experienced this tactic on Greydwarves, though).

- Spikes are useful to bleed enemies to death when they are focused on another target (you), but they have to be repaired and you loose resources in case they are destroyed. I read that they could be used to funnel and kill (or soften) a troll. The trick is that mobs will avoid them if they have a clear path to you. Now, "all" you have to do is to progressively reduce their path's width until they get hit while they still go at you. I never tried this tactic, though.

Use anti-air gatling guns for drakes -angriff
That or the stinking bomb FLAK.

Spikes are rather nice for passive defense, just need to maintain them

spikes are worthless. They get destroyed easily with each hit. Archers take them out quite fast. The best ideas is to try the Masada approach. Build up the land to stark cliffs high atop you can put normal buildings. This is not unlike many medieval fortifications. Use a narrow spiral ramp or stair up so trolls stay low and you can shoot down on them. Then you can put a murder hole to shoot at the gate where all the bad guys congregate.

Unfortunately there is little defence against flying drakes. The game has not invented anti air gatling guns yet. But the good news is a few fire arrows takes them out fast But then you did not want to hear about this.

You need no walls and something stuff like that, if you have two worlds. On the one, you live free and in harmony, only Eikthyr will send some boars and necks to beat you... on the other world you fight against the bosses and knock them out. Then return to the other world and you'll live in freedom...

Attack circle is not big so if you split liveing quarters, crafting stations and beast pens into separate clusters bit far from one another those will be easier to fortify with stone walls and protect. Shorter perimeter makes mobs more likely to focus you instead of stucking on bordering constructions. Far away connected with portals or just half minute of run from one another works prity much the same.

Also forget dirt walls and trenches. Build on world-made island and be good for life.
