Growth Spawns

This might be a stupid question, but is there a way to permanently get rid of them? There are several pits around the plains area I decided to build in, and due to my lack of forethought, one is within proximity to my house... so, the growths keep spawning and basically wrecking my build - which is, obviously, frustrating - especially when all I get for killing them is 1 tar. I thought maybe raising / leveling the terrain would work but can anyone confirm or deny this method? If anyone has dealt with a similar issue and found a solution, I'd love some suggestions!

Update: more workbenches seemed to do the trick. I'm currently building a stone tower over the area, and no more annoying interruptions! Thanks everyone for the suggestions

Or treat it as a farming opportunity? They don't like fire.

Kill them all and drain the tar pit. If any pools are left they will respawn.

They respawn, even with a workbench near by.

Yes, even with the workbench nearby and the pool drained they continue to respawn. I'm going to try raising / filling the pool and planting grass over flattened terrain tomorrow. I'll update if it works.

Maybe if I extend my house over the tar pit...?

That's definitely crossed my mind. I might have to try it if messing with the terrain doesn't work. I can't imagine them spawning through stone floors...
