help power outage lost all gear
Had a power outage playing on friends server, when i returned my body was at my home base, with food eaten and the wishbone but all gear and carry on was lost.
My body was not where it was when the power went out and checked at the last location it died. there was no tombstone in either location. Anyway to get all my gear back?

Yeah, I host 2 servers for friends on a dedicated Server I built and yeah, I make daily backups of it, on my nas and my primary machine. I do have a UPS but its only really strong enough for the nas lol.
Also this game isn't hard on a SSD or HDD from what I've noticed, I did have to install a Compress mod onto the server because of how crappy the game tends to behave with a ton of buildings and players on the networking side of things, but even a HDD can handle it pretty well, Of course I would always go for a SSD.

but if you keep loading and leaving the game, you will probably overwrite the backup and have to dig out the last one you manually backed up instead.
That is the problem. You do it once to check out your game and it will override your old save. This system is BAD. IronGate needs to incorporate a better save system with at least (IMHO) six backups of old world saves.

The system is barely sufficient if you had a crash. Then you know to grab a backup before opening the game again, and hope the .olds will save you from total corruption and loss.
It would be nice to have an option to keep more, but the files are gigantic. I like my home-brew system, which compresses them off onto my non SSD drive. I dunno ... I am with you that it could be better, but for stuff like this, it seems like DIY gets you what you want exactly rather than deal with 'meh' that cuts across the average.

?!?
Not sure how your files became "gigantic", but my save folder is like... 315MB. But then I mostly play my main on my main world...

world files grow as your build and modify the worlds.
I have 5 serious worlds, so that would be about 300MB * 5 * 6 (your number) is 9000MB or about 9GB. Which isnt so bad on my rotating disk, but the SSD I want my active save files on is smallish. I also have 3 characters but those files are tiny.

9GB would still be ok, even on a 256GB SSD, I mean the game is like 1GB, so the whole thing would be about 10 gigs...
TESO would look at that and sniff in disgust at such puny requirements. ;)
But yeah, I can understand if you run out of space, that this would be a problem. But I seriously would consider a bigger SSD. I mean, they're not THAT expensive any more. ;)

If your friend's server is his local computer (and not an actual dedicated server), he could use devcommands and spawn in your gear. Else, you can start a new temporary world and use devcommands and spawn in your gear. But if you meant a magical way to retrieve it, probably not.
Your character files are stored in "%appdata%\..\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\characters". Locate the "charactername.fch" file (whatever your character name is), rename it "character.bak". (This step is just so you have a backup.)
After that, rename the "charactername.fch.old" file to "charactername.fch" and log in again.
If this does not work, then you'll probably have to try the devcommands. (Rename the files to what they were before you modified them.)

That is why it is important to always have backups of one's important data. Not just your Valheim save game, but all your data on your computer. Computers can fail. For whatever reason.

+1 to this ! Kept me employed for decades hardware fails SUCK! this was only a power fail ! i once had to tell a laptop owner their HDU was Dead.. 5 years of their thesis ...no backups! HDU sounded like a hammer! That is why it is important to always have backups of one's important data. Not just your Valheim save game, but all your data on your computer. Computers can fail. the game auto backs up. If you have not damaged it, you can restore charname.old file -- this is useful anytime you died and want to cheat your stuff back, but if you keep loading and leaving the game, you will probably overwrite the backup and have to dig out the last one you manually backed up instead.
