hi magilla666, no insult taken and thanks for help. Alas I have tried that though, to no effect. I cant fathom why it wont work...any other advice greatly appreciated or anyone else who may have come across the same thing? My stuff is in the plains (although next to the ocean)..

SOLUTION. Go into your library and right click the game. Open the properties tab.

In launch options, enter "-console" (without quotes). Now when you launch the game F5 will allow you to access the console

is this on a laptop or desktop? I know on laptop I've had issue with my F# keys previously because the Fn key was acting up on me.

Ha! I had this exact same problem. What fixed it for me was I clicked "Start Server" on the screen I select my seed, then entered a password. Then, tah-dah! My F5 worked.

Don't mean to insult you with this but...some laptops' function keys aren't really function keys. You need to use alt-F5 or ctrl-F5 to use them.
