I don't like how the debug mode is implemented

I've just finished the game, played solo the whole way through without any use of debug mode, love it, can't wait for when they finish the game (even though I like it as is, to be honest, it feels pretty complete already).

There is just one thing that bothers me a little, enough to discuss it here and get other people's perspectives. I don't like how the debug mode is implemented, I don't like that there isn't a way to distinguish who played the game fairly and actually made it through all the content without spawning stuff in with console commands. I think they should make it so that if you start a world (or a server), there should be a choice to allow or completely disallow the use of debug mode, I also think that characters which have at any point used debug mode also shouldn't be able to join non debug mode worlds/servers. The debug mode in my opinion defeats the whole purpose of the survival aspect of the game if you can just spawn in whatever you want at a whim, and that there's no telling who did that and who didn't.

Don't get me wrong, I think that debug mode defenetly has it's place in Valheim, for people who just wanna mess around, or build stuff without gathering materials (basically treating it like the creative mode in Minecraft), I don't want that taken away from them, but I don't like that there is no way to tell who used debug mode and who actually played the game fair and square.

I'm interested in what you think.

Why do you care so much how others play? Do you really think playing a game is some sort of real achievement?

If you only want to play with people that follow certain rules you make up play with your friends.

I hope they never do such a thing - what would be next people that build "cheese-bases"? People that use some other form of cheesing?

This is not a competitive game.

I agree with the idea that on a dedicated server devcommands should be an option. Also that only characters created for that server should be able to play there. This just for admins, so they can have control over what type of gameplay they want to allow on their server.

For solo worlds? Who cares?

The dev commands are also there since the game is in EA status. The devs understand that bugs will happen. They included them so people don't have to completely start over if their game bugs out.
So what you should be saying is, Thank you devs for having the foresight and courtesy to include then for us.

I agree with the original poster's pride in playing the game without using devcommands. I also agree that whoever hosts a server should be able to prevent players from using devcommands while on the server.

The original poster should, however, be content with his accomplishments and not be concerned about how others play. What one person sees as cheating may be using a shortcut to another or smart playing to others.

Whatever barriers Iron Gate Studio may put in place to the use of devcommands will be figured out and circumvented by players sooner or later. As they say: Locka are made to keep honest people out.

I personally would rather see Iton Gate Studio concentrate on finishing the game rather than getting into an "arms race" with those who cheat or use shortcuts, or play smart, whichever way one wants to see it.

I think no, it is a server admin set of tools.

I like that the game gives people the freedom to play how they like. No need to foster elitism in a basically game for fun.

If you prepare properly and manage things there isn't really anything to brag about anyway.
I know what I have done. That is all that matters to me.

Just my perspective

I get that some people are competitive, but for me personally, I don't care who used what command at what point. There aren't any global challenges and leaderboards where devmode would give people an unfair advantage. Sure, it could be made a server setting to create non-devmode worlds, but I thought it wasn't even available in a multiplayer game? Or was that just dedicated servers?

It used to be an option you could just type in but the devs changed it to needing a steam launch command to invoke it in game.

I have never used it myself though. But I probably would if the map got me stuck someplace as a bug or something.

It is funny how people care how others play their solo game...like it even matters or affects you in any way.
