Finally broke down and used console commands.

I know Valheim's a tough game. I'm used to being dogpiled on, killed, dying for stupid reasons, and having to go back for my stuff. It's the way the game rolls, and it's fun. But...

I was halfway across the world from my spawn. I was at the plains, which I haven't been around much, but I was exploring, staying off shore to avoid the deathsquitos. After going 3/4 the way around a large mass (wind in my face the entire way no matter which direction I sailed, of course), I got stuck on a sandbar, way off shore. Of course, a couple of goblins swam out and broke my longboat in what seemed like half a dozen hits. I can handle two goblins, ordinarily. I tried to shoot them from the boat, but that didn't work, they were too close. I'd have fought them in the waist deep water after it broke, but the water disarmed me every time it rose, and the mobs have no such problem. Dead. Again.

The heck with it. I broke out the cheat commands. It STILL took me a half hour to fly across in god/debug mode, kill the goblins, reclaim my stuff, and set up a teleporter to pick up the exploration later, when I felt like it. I have no idea how much IRL time it would have taken to do it the RIGHT way, but I decided I didn't want to find out. Tired of getting hosed like that. Life's too short.

I agree 100% that the swim mechanic in this game is broken. I am supposed to be this awesome viking warrior but I can't swim 20 yards without drowning.

Even w/ my swim at 59 (which has taken forever) I can't swim to things I can see.

These things make the game annoying.
It is not hard, it's just stupid at times.

Swim mechanic needs improvement.

First, you cant dive (why!? with all this armor on you... hehe...) Then, you lose stamina too fast. You swim like 50 metters and die, seriously? I do much better at my age. And im not a viking... hmm.. half-viking may be. There must be a way to regain stamina or so. Now swimming is too dangerous.

And, last but not least, if you can fight unarmed, you can use knife aswell, right? I'd love to jump into water and kill the serpent with my dagger. It's a pretty common heroic deed... WAY more heroic, then shooting four arrows standing on deck.

Maybe an in water grapple mechanic with a success chance based on your unarmed skill and swim skill with damage dealt based on your knife and knife skill? Would allow you to deal with any enemies who catch you in water where you couldn't normally fight back, plus it might be fun to wrestle a sea serpent.

It's a fail in the game.
There are no official servers and therefore nothing prevents that from happening.
The game is too hard + they added a cheat console, it's like hacking your own game.

The reason why the difficulty is ridiculously high is to disguise that there is little content and the game is actually too short.
The game is very good, anyway. It needs a new character creation of course, and more content.

For what it's worth, I don't blame you. We only have so much free time, and it always seems to get shorter and shorter the older we get.

its all downhill from here. You'll lose interest soon if you haven't already.

Start fresh. Play Hardcore.

Only console command I use is /tutorialtoggle (because I start over often).

If you (or anyone) are up to a co-op hardcore attempt let me know. Its fun playing when death is more meaningful.

The game isn't "too hard"... Almost every time someone says they got killed or says the game is too difficult, it it revealed that player went into an area of the game they were not meant to be in yet... either they did not have the proper gear or didn't stay properly fed and rested. or they were new players just out "exploring" and went into biomes that are meant for later in the game.

It is NOT that difficult if you follow the game progression, fully "playing" each biome to it's fullest, upgrading gear and foods and skills, to PREPARE to finally beat the boss of that biome before moving on to the next biome.

If you try to move ahead too quickly or just randomly wander through the world, you are likely going to die.

Many players, including myself, have played through the current content, solo without cheats or (in my case, without mods) and did just fine.

You think the game is hard now? just wait... they havent even put in the "hard" stuff yet... if the next 4 biomes ramp up in the same magnitude as the current content, it's going to make the current content seem like a cupcake festival in comparison.

I agree with Gladia8tor.

Too much crying about difficulty.

Slow down. Get that troll armor upgraded. Upgrade that finewood bow. Sneak more.
Keep an eye on your hunger. Save your Stamina (STOP SPRINTING EVERYWHERE). Keep that poison resist potion up in the swamp.

Know when to stay and fight. Know when to run.

I'm an old man. What I lack in response time I make up for in patience and knowledge of the game.

If anything, this game desperately needs a hardcore mode.

It certainly doesn't need to be made easier.

Seems like a couple people here didn't actually read the post. OP aint complaining about the game being hard, he's just describing one of those rare rage moments that makes ya want to break down and break out the console commands. I know I've had my boats suddenly beached on a sand bar when the tide comes down, thankfully that hasn't happened to me near the plains while an age away from any outpost or base.

As I said, the game's hard. No tears. I just finally lost patience in this case, because 1- I was killed not by a lack of skill, but by two different absurd game mechanics that combined to render me helpless, and 2- it was going to take a huge chunk of real life time to get back to square one, so I finally said @#$!. Been playing it for dozens of hours, the hard way, so I don't feel too bad.

This.

One, bad luck with constant wind in my face, then finding a sand bar the hard way, far out from shore. Two, couldn't shoot the little @#$!'s swimming out to kill me. Unless you're aiming at something far away, any arrow you shoot is gonna go into the railing of your longboat. Three, being in water anywhere around combat is certain death. You can't move well or quickly, you're unarmed/disarmed, and you often can't get OUT of the water. The mobs suffer none of these problems.

I'm loving this game, hard stuff and all. Rough spots, no problem, this fantastic 'early access' game has already paid for itself several times over in my opinion. But yeah, I have a vague hope that devs read posts like this and keep it in mind as they're working on the product.

I don't find any of the mechanics that caused your demise to be absurd.

If I had been in your shoes, and used console commands to get out of my situation. I would have lost interest almost immediately in that character and started over.

There are consequences to dying w/ out a back up ship ready in the wings. There are consequences for going too far beyond your last spawn point.

Console commands remove those consequences.

While you might be fine with going into "god mode" to retrieve your gear I wouldn't have been (fine with it).

You've taken a memorable moment in your characters journey and trivialized it.
