Woes of animal breeding

Finally managed to find and tame a 1-star boar.
After several in-game weeks, finally managed to get it to breed.

Then a bunch of trolls came in a siege, broke the walls, killed half of them.

No biggie, coralled what I could and re-bred them.

After one of my returns from mining forays...

'The cold wind is blowing from the mountains'

A bunch of drakes came and commited genocide of all my da_n boars.

Do I, like, have to build a freaking castle for my bl__dy livestock?!

night or day, it matters not.

To OP: put the piggies in a barn with no windows. best you can do against the flying mob events. no fire based light in the barn or they will freak out

They dumped the fire freak out for tames a while back. I believe the effect on wilds was not changed.
right on, thanks

I don't see much point in keeping animals anywhere near your main base, similar to what SPooKie suggested. My farms and lox rearing grounds are in different (separate) locations accessed by portals, and I never stay overnight in either location if I can help it.

This has worked for me as well, but time doesn't pass for the boars when the player is not present, so I ended up moving my veggie and tree farms there. Before we had pause, I would visit the boars prior to going afk (with my ears on).

Of course, this undermines the advantage of keeping your livestock remote. You can minimize the time you spend there, but they won't reproduce in your absence.

I was about to commit the gambler's fallacy and suggest that the best time to go should be right after an attack on your main base, but the chances of an event are x% per unit of time, so it makes no difference.

A large number of starred boars inside a stockade can do a good job of defending themselves. Some will die, but you were going to kill them anyway.

Roofing a large area is possible, but its easier to sequester a pair of breeders in Ft. Knackwurst adjacent to the big pen.

Tamed wolves and boars can mingle.

One disadvantage of having a large number of tamed animals on your premises is framerate.

During events, you want to draw attackers away from your animals, but that's easier said than done. I lost my first **boars to a skeleton surprise when I thought I had drawn off the attackers. I was having a wonderful time finding out how many I could destroy in once swing of my crystal battle ax. Then I heard squealing from the boars.

When I arrived, just in time to see the last one buy the farm, the pen was full of twinkling bones and boar meat. The boars had done a good job defending themselves, but there weren't enough of them.

Drakes, bats and Deathsquitos find any 'open' tames and treat them poorly. This can happen in bases near Plains and Mountains before you ever trigger an event by killing the right boss. I'm currently covering my breeding pens, including lox. I also pull out a couple of breeder pairs at each base with taming and put them in separate small enclosed shacks as back ups.

Unfortunately, I have experienced night time raids as well.

Probably will need to keep your taming pens inside your main base/castle and yeah fortified to all Hel. However, after they are tamed, you might want to lead them to a farm somewhere in a meadows with only a stake wall, the pens, a workbench, and a possibly a portal.

If you keep the farm far enough from everything else it shouldn't be involved in any raids. Just the occasional greyling trying to scratch through the fence.

Yes. You need to build a castle. Make sure it has no windows, or the bats will just fly in through them and murder your boars when you get the bat raid.

Also, a perimeter wall around it so no enemy attacking the building will clip through the wall to kill them.
