use valheim mod 121 on the nexus. Draugr can shoot you underwater and the dwarves can cast spells, so why cant you? Especially since mistlands and swamp are half underwater. There is also a mod to make loot float on water, 241, which makes building bases near water less hazardous and enables smoother solo killing of a certain monster

some mods work on the local client and still work with a vanilla servers. So give it a test.

I've got better exploration and unrestricted portals installed and they still work when I log into my friends default server. (I do make a point of asking if anyone on the server has an issue with it, usually I end up being the mule for ingots/ores)

Heh, I didn't have to be there for your death. I have had plenty of my own, and yea, sometimes you have to vent.
I can't find it but at one point I had a pic of me with 3 of my boats together where I had died repeatedly trying to get my stuff back. And there isn't an answer for 3 boats in the middle of the ocean, without a second player. You just leave them.

What, aren't all vikings thinking safety first in a water scenario? I know I sure wouldn't want to take any chances drowning, so id put my weapons away, too.

I've been hit by this a few times, but I'm so used to hitting the equip button that it's just second nature for me now. Any time I'm not swinging a weapon or blocking I put them away to save stamina, so, unless the water is a surprise, my weapon and shield are not going to be equiped anyway.

First sign of danger, I also ensure that I have the right weapon and shield equiped, and then put it away so that I can quickly re-equip it before I engage.

I agree fighting in water above your waist shouldn't be a thing. However NPCs have no trouble fighting in water that deep or even when fully submerged. A little inconsistency there. It should be the same for player and NPC alike imo.

There are others that affect the player and not the NPCs but they aren't the topic of this discussion.

Yes, NPC cheating is a distinct issue, and i agree, it should not be that way. I can almost accept their ignore of stamina, since that is imitated by their breaking off combat and wandering about aimlessly for a few seconds, but the water stuff, hit through walls stuff, their ability to hit when above/below you, etc all need to be consistent.

Swear they worked with the scum devs to make the most BS water mechanics in a game, Guess we should be happy doesn't take 20 RL mins to dry off just 20 mins to get back out of the water lol.
Guess just unequipping us is easier then them coding it so we can use weapons in water but at reduced damage and increased stamina.
