This game sounds great - Just have a couple of questions

I've heard a lot of great things about this game, and I am a big fan of the developers (Satisfactory is my favourite game in recent years) but I was always put off by the 3rd person viewpoint which I just can't stand in a full 3D game like this so I decided against trying it out.

Then I heard about the 1st person mod and now I am very interested again. So could somebody with experience of the mod answer a few questions for me please ?

- Just how playable is the game in 1st person and are there any real issues with the mod ?

- Does this mod ( or mods in general ) get broken with every update ?

- Have the Devs made any comment about an official 1st person view ?

Thanks in advance.

Less than 1% of people who bought the game are playing.

Sometimes, but not as much as you might expect. The expansive compilation mods tend to be quickly updated to match and the little single function ones only break if the subsystem they're concerned with gets big changes. Even then they might spew a bunch of warnings on launch but still have some working settings. BepInEx is an impressive toolkit.

Yes, there is currently no official mod support from the devs, so mods will have a good chance of breaking after a game update. The game is in Early Access and their focus will of course on completing the game in their vision. I'm sure they will polish it up and add more QoL. if you have concerns, maybe wait till version 1.0 release. I have nearly 900 hours in this game and most without using mods, and loving it. Like most games, it boils down to your own opinions. Some will like it (people won't complain) and some won't (people will complain)

I can't speak for that. If that is what sells you on the game, over what it has to offer, then more reason for me to suggest that you wait till 1.0 release. It will take some time tho. They are likely at least 2 years away.
There should be a feedback link in the pinned messages in this forum. You should send a feedback and ask for 1st person view. Or go on their Discord and talk to them. They seem a friendly bunch. But in the end, a game dev have a vision and usually stays with it unless they are sold on an idea. Just remember they can't always cater to everyone's personal opinions.

Very helpful thank you. I'm going to do a bit more research but it looks like I'll be buying the game in the near future. My only real concern now is weather I'll still be able to play in first person soon after each update. If I can then I'm 100% sold.

So just 2 questions now (to anybody)

Do these mods tend to break after each update ?

Any word from the devs about an official 1st person option ?

I'm a bit late but you and I think the same way-- getting a 1st person mod was the first thing I did.

I used (https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/44) and have found it to be near-perfect. FOV and other settings can be set through a config file.

It's made the game about 1000x times more immersive and actually quite frightening at times. Combined with the phenomenal scenery, lighting, weather, and ocean systems, it's just beautiful. Legitimately one of the prettiest exploration games I have played, but in it's own stylized, artistic way as opposed to true 100% realism (which I'm tired of at this point anyway).

But, there are a couple downsides. The game was never designed for this, so at higher FOVs you are going to experience some occasional clipping when straight down at your body. Still, I play at 100 or 110, which is quite high, and it's never taken me out of immersion.

The only other bug I've found is that, for some reason, if you are seated on a ship anywhere but the driver's seat, then the boat can jitter a bit when you look around. This only happens if you turn more than about... oh 30 degrees left or right. It's a bit annoying, but really was a non-issue for me, and holding onto the mast in 1st person while traversing a wild ocean storm really gives you a sense of true adventure.

There are other options, too-- ValheimPlus is probably the most popular mod and comes with a whole suite of upgrades you can turn on and off individually. I didn't realize it came ready with 1st person camera options and, since I had a working camera mod already, I haven't bothered to test how good their 1st person plugin is.

Let me know if you want help setting up the mods/mod managers-- it's not hard, but I did end up having to use something called "thunderstore mod manager" in combination with manually installed mods from nexus (which are just drag and drop plugins).

Hope that actually helps you!

What ? Hahhhahahah no bro , there is a ton of bad players that easily can destroy and take your things with the hammer if public servers happen like that , thats why you have to find a new private server open 24/7
This isnt an mmo , is a co op game

Yes this is the point. Immersion in a game is the most important aspect to me, alongside the basic mechanics.

I strongly disagree with this. Games like Mirrors Edge and Dying Light have complex environments and movement mechanics and work great in 1st person. Doom Eternal also.. even has a dodge move and wouldn't be half as good in 3rd person. Mordhau and Chivalry
have complex 1st person melee combat that works brilliantly. Basically there has never been a fully 3D 3rd person game that I wouldn't have preferred if it was in 1st person and I have avoided many games because of this.

Originally posted by Lee23:

I am not asking them to change it. I would like an additional option to play in 1st person. Before I made this thread I searched this forum for threads including "first person" and found many requests from people asking for it to be added. The largest thread had overwhelming support for the idea, and so I wondered if the Devs had made any response to this request. So the reason they might consider adding it would be to please a large section of their playerbase and to not alienate players like myself who wouldn't even consider a purchase without being able to play in 1st person.

But thanks for being the only reply to address the topic.

He has no clue what he is on about... for example... right now, on twitter you can see the #BuildForBaldr contestants entering images of their builds in Valheim...

..nothing has gone downhill.

Looking at his posting history it becomes rather clear what sort of ilk he is too.

the only problem I've had with 3rd person is it being a bit wonky interior spaces. otherwise, I think the 3rd person is completely fine.

i haven't tried 1st person but I'd assume would change the experience quite a bit. might even make it scarier, since you're seeing through the eyes of the player and not a camera. might also make it harder to navigate. as a game designer myself i've read into entire lessons about when to choose 1st person vs 3rd person, the difference is more than you'd think. for games where you have to see your own movement, 3rd person is very much preferred. in this game you definitely have to see where you are relative to your environment, 1st person combat would likely be so much more difficult.

the 3rd person camera works and controls near perfectly, I don't really see why they'd consider changing it
