GPU Heat Question with this game
My GPU goes crazy and heats up to around 188 degrees when playing this game and I can't figure it out. I should be able to play at max settings (the game doesn't lag or anything), but I also don't want to wreck something on my GPU. Anyone else experiencing this? Do I just bit the bullet and turn down the settings? My card is a Radeon RX 5700 XT

Same issue here. Radeon RX 5600 XT. GPU heats up like crazy and also for some reason I cannot maintain above a steady 50 fps.

This game is just oddly demanding I think. In the meantime I'm just going to hedge on performance passes being done before full release.

Yeah I have a 5700xt I am gonna refund. This game runs like ♥♥♥♥. I get a solid 98fps at 4k/ultra settings in Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor benchmark this morning which is far more visually sophisticated than this game. Valheim is just slathered in sloppy post-processing effects. It's certainly not optimized. All the positive reviews are obviously from people with very low standards with regards to performance. Game runs and looks bad compared to other games so what gives?

I'm giving it a pass on performance because it's in early access, and games that have terrain editing (that aren't specifically about terrain editing) tend to have poor performance in general. If it's still performing this poorly at full release, I'll start complaining.

lol poor fools using amd......
I'll take a performance hit if it means supporting a company who doesn't constantly have to cripple their hardware when the vulnerabilities get found out.

RX 5700 (non-XT) + 3700x user here. Not a single problem on my end. Game runs at a solid 80fps during daytime which can drop to around 50 every now and then but its not that big of a problem. Maxed settings except for view distance, which is set to high. No temperature issues at all, GPU hasn't done any crazy stuff in 2 hours of playing. I own a reference model RX 5700 (blower style). Could not be happier with it considering I got it for €280 and they fixed drivers a long time ago.

Not that odd really games with deformable terrain tend to have performance issues. This game is just oddly demanding I think. In the meantime I'm just going to hedge on performance passes being done before full release.
Turning shadows down a notch seems to help a lot on this title.

Yea my ♥♥♥♥ goes up to 80c while on the ocean and average 65-75 on mainland. Nothing you can really do other than lower your settings/cap your framerate, Or wait for them to optimize the game.

Same here. 2080ti and temps don't seem right to me. Couldn't encourage such level of disastrous optimization taking in account its graphics. I'm refunding it for now,

amdgpu-pci-2d00
Adapter: PCI adapter
vddgfx: 1.02 V
fan1: 2079 RPM (min = 0 RPM, max = 5200 RPM)
edge: +87.0°C (crit = +94.0°C, hyst = -273.1°C)
power1: 109.04 W (cap = 110.00 W)
same issue, radeon 480RX going over 90°C (perhaps time to apply new paste) and eventually emergency shutdown. I'd recommend not frying your graphics card...

If your GPU is under max load it will reach it's hottest temp possible, regardless of what application is stressing it. If your temps are out of the ordinary it may be time for a repaste or a change of chassis that allows better airflow. You can also try aim for a lower FPS target to take some of the load off if you are comfortable with that.
That said, this game is the most GPU demanding game in my library and that is hopefully because they haven't touched optimisation yet.

For me, playing at mid-high on a 970, with more or less stable 60 fps at 55-63°, the issue is the fire / torches, which can easily increase my temp for like 5-8°.
Ive resorted in decreasing the amount of em just cause of this gpu heat increase.
Must add this is something not so rare, as other games had same issue with fire, taking big performance hits.

Heat is an issue with almost any box/laptop these days. Either buy a bunch of extra fans for your box, a cooling pad for your laptop or use fan control software to get your fans running when they should be, not when windows/bios thinks the should be.
Notebook FanControl is pretty good and simple software option, get it here. https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc
Cheers,

I have the following specs below and I'm running max settings except Motion Blur and DOF, an I'm sitting at a range of 52-60 and 47-52 when there's a lot of things happening I'm sitting at 57-67° when the AC is off and around 50-60° when its on. The game runs pretty smoothly for me

Change thermal paste on GPU and make sure that GPU is clean with good airflow...
