i love the sea just wish it was more dangerous .. and there were a few more monsters there i think it more Adrenalin making on a stormy night than the swamps bring on more monsters and maybe whirlpools:

I spent about 5 hours the other day at a snails pace just trying to get my ship back to port. Made the mistake of thinking "oh lets explore the coastline of that island" only to find out most islands in my seed are more than double the size of my starting island. The wind in addition to the rain seem to work in tandem to to cause as much damage as it could to my ship, and make sure I couldn't escape a sea serpent. Tried going with the wind, and only seconds after doing that the wind would make a massive change in direction forcing me to go the same way I was just going. This went on for around 5 hours. I eventually gave up getting home via the ocean, got as close to a black forest as I could and luckily the sea serpent destroyed my ship close enough to shore I was able to avoid dying. Mined to some crypts, and made a portal to connect to a emergency portal I always put up before going out for long expeditions. On day 246 so far without dying. Still love the game, the ocean mechanics themselves are really amazing. Weather is kinda wonky, and seems to rain more than have sunshine but it is what it is. Love the game.

Only 25% of the "wind circle" for lack of a better term is ever DIRECTLY against the wind. If the "blowing wind" icon on the UI is white, your sails are working. You're given a pretty generous angle with which to catch the wind. So stop acting like you can't sail if the wind isn't exactly where you want it to be. The icon is white for 75% of directions you could go. It's really not that hard to "zig zag" (tack) kind of like you have to in real life, uh, sailing.

A 5 hour sailing journey means one of two things; either you sailed from one end of the map to the other, or you are severely misunderstanding something about the sailing system in this game.

No. Wind in my face maybe 30% of the time, and I don't run into rocks because I can steer.

(Use the A and D keys, it works wonders for not running into things)

The wind is random. Ask any modder whose cracked open the code, the direction the player is traveling or what they are doing has no interaction with the the direction of the wind at all.

My wife often describes my sailing as something more dangerous than the sea serpents and Plains straights. I honestly have no clue what shes talking about. Ive only crashed like 3 longboats into the dock so far and sunk one on the rocks. And that one the troll found while we were faffing with the Black Forest.

What do you expect? That IG code on purpose to put wind in your face when need it and in your back when the game judge that you need to sail near the coast between rocks?

Here's an idea, stop trying sail against the wind. Let the wind decide which way you are going to explore.

Every boss has been upwind and halfway across the map for me. Like I said, I think I got shafted with a bad seed.

Been there. "Welp, I was gonna go East around this island, but it seems I'll be going West."

My worst sailing experience was getting stuck on top of three perfectly spaced rocks. Had high swell waves, I was looking at the coast. Wave lifted my longboat up, and dropped it right in the middle of the rocks, two on one side, front and back, one on the other side in the middle. That's when the waves decided to calm down. Tried to break the rocks with the pick but could not hit them from the boat and they were just steep enough that i could not stand. Finally had a large wave come along and lift me off.
