Mob spawns in base
I restarted a map so it will have better spawns of stuff for Mistlands. I made a new base in Black forest, like the terrain for ideas to build. I have ton of worktables that are protected from rain, lot of overlap. It was by old stone tower which I removed. I keep getting grey dwarves spawn up at night and it is annoying. Sometimes I get brute, shaman, or grey dwarves spawn up right next to work station. Have active hearth at all times. Should I move my base? In other games I really had little to no issue not like this base is having. I have stone like castle (first floor only) with earthen walls that nothing can climb over, there is no open part of the wall. Similar to past outpost that was on the edge of plains/black forest which was very good on defense and killing stuff. It is annoying hear stuff getting attacked when in my base.
Dock area during big storm, is crazy. Some parts above water to get water debuff and then the water disappears to nothing. Looks deep until the storm takes the water out. Meaning ships running aground. About 4 blocks drop on the water from the storm. Black forest close to ocean and my base.

That is why I try to find tall with somewhat flat hills/mountains (not mountain biome). It has the best defense and less likely to get damage from log trolls. Plus I stay away from islands to make my base. I seen trolls up to their heads in water plus big storms can be annoying.

How can something walk around earthen walls? They should totally enclose your base, if not, you need either a ditch or finish the wall, or both. Or a cliff will work if it is high enough. Glad you found the culprit. Now you know the drill, also maybe every so often check the coverage, especially after troll raids as their log damage goes in about 3 floor squares deep. Veggies and trees don't take damage but buildings do, anything made from stone or wood. Earth walls are impervious.

perhaps post a pic of your current base where they spawn.. Or put a workbench up approximately where the old tower was to negate their spawn point..? a workbench will do it.. no need for a fire imho That is what I am thinking for night spawn area. But thought work benches should block it. Bit confused if work benches do not block the night spawn point. Unless need non burning campfire to try to help stop the spawning like with tar beasts and tar pits.

I look again and found small gap between work benches, I added a few more benches to close the gaps. I see next few game days if still happens.

the wave problem can only be avoided by digging inland with the pickaxe or finding a natural BAY area as in this the waves arent as high. right at oceansite there is just nothing you can do againist waves flooding in if the structure isnt high enough up above the biggest waves youll get flooded. dont build the mainbase too close to oceansite or raise ground level to maximum first and see if it stays above the waves during a storm.
for the ships a bay/river/lake access is the only way to prevent boats from bouncing. a open sea harbor just doesnt work during a storm. boats will jump.
as for the spawns. make sure you have 100% area covered. workbenches show the radius at which they block spawns. if a bench is destroyed spawns become possible again. if there is even a small spot that isnt covered mobs can spawn there and annoy you.
make sure its not a mod causeing this if you run any.
its pretty simple to avoid spawns in the base otherwise (aside bats. they can spawn anywhere that isnt a shelter area even on the ocean)

Have you actually seen critters spawn next to workbench? If so, send a bug report. If not, then indeed you might have a sliver of ground uncovered. If some of your coverage is from above ground, like on a second or third floor of a building, the coverabe is like a bubble, so it will be smaller area as it gets lower (if that makes sense - think of the item as the center of a ball, not just within a simple circle, the diameter changes both above and below).
The best way to check coverage is to run around with a small floor or wall piece and look for the problem. It really can be a very tiny area. You can also validate files in case there is a corruption.

In other words real coverage is a sphere, but the circle always shows like a cylinder. Think of a sphere in a cylinder, the area in the cylinder not touched by the sphere is not covered - even though that's what the circle shows. ...

or use a ward. thier area seems a bit larger to me. and they definitly extend upwards CRAZYly^^ tested this on a dvergr tower which had a really high mistlands rock above it. even on the top of this rockpillar the ward was blocking me despite showing the sphere ending way below me. it looks like a sphere but believe me : the actual effect isnt a sphere. definitly not. more like a tube that stands on its flat side. thats how it works. it blocks all air spawns above it. a sphere couldnt do that in the first place.

Mmmm, not really. What shows as coverage on a 2nd floor may not show as coverage in a basement. But folks wont check the basement cuz the 2nd floor was fine. Coverage is coverage. It is just easy to miss what is actually covered as opposed to what we assume is covered. Think I have beaten that dead horse enough for now but you get the drift.

I looked at the seed online for map seed, it says there is camp almost where I have my base. Mobs spawn only at night. I be repairing items and then shaman is attacking all my storage chests. 2 work benches that overlap. Repair one and other one on other side of storage chests. Had 2 trolls walk around the earth walls, arrows to the head make quick work of them. I can hear the grey dwarves on the other side of earthen walls. All my earthen walls are high enough to block trolls and great for shooting in the head. Other time I got 2 grey dwarves by my furnace that had few work benches but it was foggy unless that spawn them.
Do you think a ward will stop spawns?
I thought about moving base to meadows but like the layout for black forest, just not the dock area. Funny how other outposts for docks do not have the same issue with this black forest one. Plains/meadow with very close ocean need lost water like this current dock.
I have not killed any bosses on this new map. The toon has not killed the dragon boss in another world.

wards stop spawns for certain. but benches should anyway and are cheaper to make.
i dont use map seed as its too cheaty for me but a mobcamp doesnt matter. my base is where once a fueling village was aswell. never had spawns. aside a few deathsquitos fyling in but they came from far outside anyway which isnt covered.
is there a greydwarf spawner at your base maybe?

THIS..^^^^ if youve seen Trader Haldors Bubble thats what it looks like so dont forget the vertical when u place WorkB's especially as the old tower is still a spawner for GD,s im guessing

I built a completely new Black Forest base for Mistlands and I haven't had any unusual problems with spawns. Are you sure you have full coverage and aren't missing a spot?
