the raft is great. For the cost of little more than bashing a group of idiot dwarfs over the head, you can hop onto some mostly submerged logs tied together with an old shoe string, leave your clothes and weapons and everything in a chest, and sail off into the sunset without a care. Found the plains and dead? No problem, no need to recover that empty corpse or that leaky old boat, tap a rock in the forest and you are all set to try it again! You can explore in complete safety and ghetto warp home at any time by simply jumping in the water for a short swim.

Its also great for fetching your real boat after an incident, if you for some reason took off wearing gear or in a boat that you care about.

rafts are mainly useful for navigating rivers by boat. I've actually used them as lazy time edge revealers around islands

You have to manually destroy it and then gather the parts. Do it close to the shore so you don't lose the mats to the sea.

You can nudge it on to shore as well to get it out of the water entirely. It's pretty sluggish but it gets you from A to B if you need to cross a stretch of water, awful for dedicated travel though.

pull any ship into shallow water and hit it with your prefered weapon. it will drop 100% of the mats when it falls aprt.

this method also works on the carts.
