yes, if you eat bread a lot, barley will keep you a bit busier.
I do not use much bread for this reason, but its a valid point. The rest of the foods use only a modest amount.

dude , i was meaning about uses of barley on food , not their harvestIf carrots or turnips take damage they're destroyed. But with barley and flax, damage just harvests it, so you can use a bronze atgier and middle-click to harvest it really fast. I keep an atgier hanging next to my cultivator on the wall by my crops. Barley needs a lot of farming even for 1 player
4 flours for each plain food and 10 for breads , my reply was for carrots and turnips do not needs so much farm for only one player and thats true , but not for end game food thats uses a lot of barley ( and i have a farm with 400 barley for each harvest , that i use iron sledge for that long ago ) , plus waits that windmill do their job after the harvest

this is not true if you only feed yourself. It takes like 30 seconds to plant and harvest enough for 1 person. It becomes more true if you are growing food for a team or growing excess for fun. I have a 20 plant garden that feeds me with excess, as a baseline.

The Devs have designed things to encourage/ necessitate exploration, and therefore made only very few items that can be grown / farmed.... The same applies to taming animals.... very few can be tamed and raised to harvest, making it necessary to leave the "safety" of the homestead and go out to hunt / gather the majority of the ingredients needed for more complex foods and recipes.
There are mods which allow a person to plant / farm all the various plants and trees as well as tame any creature, but I can't recommend those because, after using mods for about 30 minutes, I found them to make the game something different and removed all mods ... forever. I will only play vanilla game, and the vanilla game offers very little in the way of gardening and animal taming.... Just FYI.

Hmm , the crop its different in each biome , and to make it just have to use the cultivator in the earth to make it cultivable ( first option with RMB )
Heres the biomes crop differences
meadows : carrots , turnips
Black forest : carrots , turnips
Swamp : only turnips
Mountain : your sadness , there u cant crop
Plains : carrots , turnips , barley and flax
So the best biome its the last one but u need build almost a farm fortress to be fine guarded

Just find yourself a small plains island, as in 50 x 50 meters or so. There you have your barley and flax farm. Put a few workbenches and literally nothing will spawn.

at least some of the info above is likely to change with the hearth & home update. devs have shown new foods/recipes and plant-able crops in some of their teasers. (no idea yet where any of those new foods will be found) also there are 4 more biomes to be added, which will likely add even more to the farming aspects. i'd add to what others have already said in that the farther you progress in game, the less valuable early crops become, to the point they become practically useless. hopefully this can be addressed with new updated recipes!

The farming simulation is deep enough to facilitate exploration of the map. Several recipes require ingredients found by killing monsters.
I am at "mid-game" and find the only things I am planting/farming are Carrots and Turnips. This is not a diverse selection of crops. I am raising boars. All of this is simple enough to be done in very short amounts of time (5-10 minutes every hour or two). In that time-span I am harvesting well enough food to keep me and another player going.. although I did install a mod that allows you to plant seeds on a grid -- so that erased what is, to me, tedious busywork precisely spacing seeds. I enjoy it IRL, not in a game :P
I believe if the game's "farm simulation" aspects were more in-depth, it would seriously draw a player away from the exploration/combat/rest of the game. So, to me, it's balanced pretty well right now. I have another player who is content (so far, 50+ hrs in) with spending ALL of their time inside safe walls, decorating and doing their own thing, involved in very minimal combat or exploration.
I don't think it's an in-depth system, but it's what it feels like it should be.. and if you're a player inclined to do "safe" things as such.. there's plenty enough to keep you busy.

farming is a very simple mechanic that helps you make food.
you plant (there are maybe 5 things you can plant), wait, and harvest. There is not a lot more to it. There are a couple of rules, stuff has to have a bit of space (one floor tile?) between and it needs to be 'open' which not only means 'not indoors' but frequently 'not right next to your house or tall walls'. A couple of crops will only grow in one region.
preparing food and supplies like arrows for a team will keep you busy, though.
To make turnip stew, I need to grow 3 turnips and kill a deer or hog. One stew lasts 15 or 20 or so min, so for an hour one person needs 3 or so. You also need 3 different foods at all times. So extrapolating that you can see that feeding 2-3 people is a fair chore and a nonstop one. Another example is sausage, which needs meat as above, and also an 'uncommon' weed that you can't grow yourself, you have to go find it (lots, and lots of it).
a partial quick list of things you can do beyond exploring/killing/base building:
- hunt things (animals and some monsters) for consumable materials
- chop wood
- break rocks
- fish
- grow crops
- gather and process ore **
- brew mead
- tend bees (one click, but hey)
- grind grain (windmill)
- spin thread (spinning wheel) **
- raise animals (pigs, wolves, ??)
- tend fires and lamps
- manage terrain (roads? plant trees? plant glass? smooth and shape? etc)
** these are not 'ongoing' -- after a while, you have enough

Yes , thats already confirmed and a ton of new foods and recipes , to make them more "classy" ( for tank , meele or ranged players )
