What is the purpose of the core wood logs? They don't seem to convey any advantage over normal wood.

Core wood frames are dirt cheap and can handle 2 stories + roof no problem. Horizontal beams make good guard rails and decent walls.

They sort of do. You can stack them up log cabin style for walls (and vertically for fences) and a creature has to break enough of them to create a 1 tile wide hole to get through instead of breaking a single normal wood wall to get in.

They're good for harbour protection. And even edging for decks, bridges cause they snap in a way so you cant just walk over them accidentally you have to really be running at it to push yourself over them

You can build twice as high without breakage using core wood beams instead of ordinary wood. There are also some items that require core wood to make.

They provide better support than normal wood, can have longer pieces, have a different look for those wanting a certain aesthetic, and are required for crafting certain items.

Aye, regular wood beams max out at 2m each, where core wood can be 4m; this translates directly to a larger build height.

And as stated previously, they are ingredients for multiple crafted items; notably the bronze pickaxe, cultivator, finewood bow, sharp stakes, sitting log, bonfire, and multiple cauldron upgrades.

I also thought that they had slightly more hp. Am I wrong about that?

I thought that, too, so I checked the wiki. Assuming it is accurate, it states that similar pieces (I looked at the beams and poles) all had 400 durability for both core wood and regular wood.
