I don't like tower shields (too slow), so I can't tell. Round shields are much quicker and a lvl 3 shield will help you with the odd two star skelly. Just in case. This game is about being prepared.

Use whatever you feel comfortable with. At this stage all weapons work reasonably well. Make sure to have at least a lvl 3 wooden round shield. Not sure about ghosts, but they're so rare it really doesn't matter. Just whack it silly quickly.

Your crow friend will help you spot them as well, which is why I do not click on him at this stage. Acts as a radar for you with a yellow exclamation mark.

There are a few different types of entrance, and some are much harder to spot than others, some can be obscured by trees and you can walk past it without noticing anything but a few skeletons.

So skeletons and crow = crypt very close.

Sort of.
Skeletons inhabit ruined towers which do NOT have a crypt at them (in general, could be one near by coincidence). Skeletons also can roam near graves (nearby meadows) or other biomes (nearby swamp, etc).

Regardless, skeletons are still your best indication to find them, just give it a sanity check that its not the border with another biome or part of a ruin or something else. The entrances here are large, you really can't miss it if its there and you found the guards.

Look for large collections of primitive stonework often covered in Moss. As above towers or ruins of towers made from the Normal stone that you'll eventually be able to build with are not the crypts your looking for..
Bring a torch or two and maybe a stagbreaker...

The first boss gives you hard antlers for antler pickaxe. What you need are Surtling cores.
