I also look for them at night.

Yeah, specifically for wolves with stars, you'll only find them at night. Daytime only allows ones to spawn without stars. Since not all mountains spawn in the same, I recommend trying to find tiny mountains or any mountain area without too much elevation changes. You want large flat-ish open areas to get good spawn rates and make finding them easy.
Just be sure to have some obstacles or something to keep you safe. Them star wolves are dangerous since their attack speed is so high.

Out of interest, how would you bring wolves back to your base if your base is far from the mountains, maybe even across water? Asking for myself here.

A longship is your best bet. Get them to follow and build a ramp to the ship and push them on board. Out of interest, how would you bring wolves back to your base if your base is far from the mountains, maybe even across water? Asking for myself here.

IDK what would happen if you have two wolves (or boars) in the same pen and one of them gets tame before the other, but I can guess. However, it would take some good bad luck to catch a second wolf within the taming period of the first.
Nothing happens. Creatures do not attack their own kind.
Thanks. That's worth knowing. So a tamed wolf would allow a wild wolf to attack the player?

Exactly. Tamed wolf pack will not protect you from the wolf hunt.

There is a trick for 2* wolves I have found to make one spawn.
But first your pen to capture the beast, dig a hole, no repairing fence's or walls. Dig it deep as 2 wall height, 4 meters. Then make it a 4 x 4 meter square, put tall steps at top going down into hole but not touching bottom. From there you can jump on ladder - stair to get out after wolf is in hole.
Put a small house next to hole so you have cover while taming the wolf or wolves. Dont leave, they still despawn when not fully tamed. This is for the 1 and 2* wolves only I believe.
Now you need to find a 1* wolf and kill it and remember where it spawned, keep moving in a big circle in the mountain area to come back around and it usually spawns a 2* wolf in the same area. Not in the same spot but in a 300 meter or less area from where you killed the 1* wolf.
Ive dont this multiple times on different map seeds and yes it can be done in any mountain area no matter how close they are to the Boss Stones where you spawn in on first spawn.
FWI this is important, once you get 2* wolf down in hole to tame, its a good idea to build a roof over the hole so wolf does not get killed by drakes or random attacks while you are waiting for the Wolf to be tamed. Dont for get Food for taming the wolf!
I forgot to mention, 1 and 2* wolves only spawn at Night in the Mountains.

I built an iron cage in the high foothills. That wasn't strong enough, and it let the wolf see me, It was frightening to see how fast that **wolf tore through rusty iron. And my forge was inside. Gone instantly.
To be fair to me, I hadn't finished my preparations. There was supposed to be food and some sort of blind, a second workbench and a roof to keep the iron from rusting but I was working to finish it at night, figuring that if opportunity knocked I would just have to improvise.
I suck at improvising almost as much as I suck at figuring.
Here's a thought, though. Once your trap is set, destroying any workbenches will slightly improve your chances of catching your wolf, and **s are so worth it.

I thought (this being the 3rd attempt): "If I get good bad-lucky, I'll just improvise!"
Go figure.

Afaik that was changed. You just have the tameing process to start before sunrise. If you go into a portal, die or leave before its tamed it disappears.

Patience, grasshopper. 2* wolves are worth the effort. You may need better armor than the BF provides.
I died 3 times getting my 2* wolves, and I had fully upgraded wolf armor. (Three always seems to be the magic number, doesn't it?). It was completely worth it.
Build a strong pen to hold wolves, already stocked with enough food to tame them with a way to gtho after they chase you in and you close the open side. Time doesn't pass if you're far away from them, but I think the game calculates when they should be tame, so you can just leave them and come back.
hth.

The further you are from spawn the easier it gets to find starred mobs, if I'm not mistaken.
That is, if no starred wolves appear in your area you can sail somewhere else and you'll have higher chances to find them there.

The farther towards the edge of the world you are the more chance of level 2 spawns, and only at night.
The second the sun hits they run off and disappear. If you are lucky enough to see a level 2 wolf, you need to get it stuck in a pit or something as soon as possible before the sun comes up. You might want to be pre-digging pits in case you run into one.
Then you need to wait by it for maybe hours while feeding it. If you go into a portal, die or leave before its tamed it disappears. You will want to breed it on the spot and not move it, they easily aggro things and get killed.
