Valheim cured my videogame fatigue. A big thank you to the developers.

After 30 years of playing computer/videogames I found myself losing interest in games because I had seen it all before. I dont know how many games I have bought only to uninstall after a few hours. Even after upgrading to a 3070 I was playing with the idea of never playing games again. But then I discovered Valheim.

Valheim has a special place in my heart because it is truly special. Maybe I'm a bit biased since I'm Scandinavian and Meadows, Black Forest and Mountain reminds me of my childhood. But the mechanics is also great. It peaks your interests. I have 372.5 hours invested in this game so far and regardless of whats going on, returning to the meadows fills my heart with joy and love. If I ever were to win the lottery I would invest and make sure Iron Gate Studio could hire more people so they could release new content faster. Then again, this game is clearly a labor of love, so content will be slow. That is the way.

If there is anything I would change about the game it would be to make nighttime more difficult. So far I have only played solo and the game becomes relative easy fast. I would like to see more Trolls during nighttime because everyone knows Trolls come out after dark :)

Old gamer here too since Atari console/ c64....I feel you OP!
What I love about this game is the building system. I can loose myself in hours of planning how and where to build, decorating, changing things. All other aspects of the game like killing bosses and farming metals I see as a necessary activity to advance my base, but fun as well (especially organising swamp farm runs with portals - stacking up two chests with iron ore there in a little outpost before getting it back with the longboat) .
Starting with a basic base then growing when get to stone building, adding a harbour, portal hub, garden, well organised storage and more is like you have a growing little cosy village in the nothingness of nature, where you love to come back with a shipload of ore. Pure viking life!
I'm on my second Coop playthrough, while having a Singleplayer world as well, and every world/village has its own charm.

I feel the same and to be honest I can't work out why. I really like brutal survival games and this is one of the easiest ones out there. I bought Green Hell and Subnautica Below Zero this week, had another crack at Subsistence which are all great games but I keep going back to this game, delete my world and character, start again, hanging out in the meadows. I don't even feel like I need anything more from modding either, vanilla is great.

I think a big reason I, yourself and others are loving this game is it's not just beaming flashing images of addictive, dopamine inducing clickbait at you. It's a game, pure and simple and it let's you decide how and what to do. Amongst other very good gameplay elements this is a breath of fresh air and what games in general should be. Something from a labour of love and not just trying to trick end users into pressing buttons because their brain says they can't live without that next pretty colour accompanied with a lovely sound effect confirming they did good. The game industry for a lack of a better word is f#@$&*@ and if you can actually find some games amongst the addiction, money making trash out there then good luck to you and godspeed

I love these threads Roland. Good for the soul. :)

Thus, I'm sending out an extra huge Skal and a frosty mug to all of us old time gamers (yes, the devs can join in too if yer old...and tell the young bucks good job).

Our eyes may be not as sharp, and our reflexes may be not as expeditious, but we can still smell a good game throughout the morass of ♥♥♥♥ the gaming industry puts out.

Fzanco hit it on the head...you can just do what you want when you want and no unnecessary shiny bauble hoops to jump through. Plus it's so fun to build and explore (I just found the perfect bay. Wait, no this one. Nah, too rocky, Oooh, pretty sunrise...ok, time to build a harbor :) ).

Anyhow, good stuff. Us olders need to stick together, support each other in game and out. Skal, now go take a chug and kill a troll or something!
