Why do you need an anchor?

because anchors keep floating things from floating away. Why do you need an anchor?

If something else than rowing or sails could actually move the boat, maybe. But then that would mean potentially losing the ship if the anchor was not lowered or if someone wanted to grief a bit and intentionally raise it. In short, not really needed for anything right now.

As soon as you step off your boat it stops instantly and it is anchored. It can move up and down but not horizontally in any direction.

It can move a bit, but nothing major. Also, that only happens when there are large waves. As soon as you step off your boat it stops instantly and it is anchored. It can move up and down but not horizontally in any direction.

or maybe you were being sarcastic, because of course boats do float away, storms take them if you have not surrounded them with poles, and I would like to be able to recover bodies lost at sea without having to do some crazy dance or recruit a friend. I've been playing on a server (as opposed to my own world) for some time lately, and I've not seen neither the karve nor the longship move an inch horizontally despite experiencing virtually every type of weather. If they don't touch any other object (structures, terrain, mobs), and you eliminate all momentum after leaving the ship, they are effectively anchored.

They do not do that. Also, gravestones will float on water so those won't be lost in the sea either. I was late to learn that myself way back too.

If that is still the case then I agree. When I jump directly from the tiller off the boat it stops instantly and always stays right there. If I just let go of the tiller it still has momentum. The boats I park by jumping off only move up and down in my experience. I use boats alot. But yeah, ANYTHING extra for boats I would be totally into. Anchors, oars, custom sails, shields on the sides that add durability, being able to climb the mast to scan ahead, animal pens for transport, drawbridges, ..... etc. I am kinda confident we are going to see big boat changes and additions when the ocean biom gets some love.

Yeah, it's not that having anchor or some other feature would be a bad thing, but there just isn't framework or elements to use them around of. Maybe later, fingers crossed.

Try jumping from the tiller directly over the side into the water. Until an official anchor comes that might help you do what you want.
Side note, if playing multiplayer everyone has to be off the boat for it to stop. If the driver jumps off but someone else is there, the boat still drifts.
