Is magic going to be implimented?
So I read an article or two about how there is a very popular mod that adds spell casting to the game. Considering it's popularity have the devs said anything about adding magic to the game officially in a similar manner?

Very early, people found skills for Frost magic, and fire magic I. The game code, no idea if they will ever be implemented, but I hope so :D
Either way, my bet is we won't get them.until they add deep north and/or Ashlands content :)
But I would love to play a shaman ;D
Healing like a greydwarf, shielding like a fuling, torching like a cultist ;D
It would probably work best if these were an item, that consumed a special ammo, kind of like a bow consuming arrows to fire projectiles, we could have a staff or totem that consumes (x) to produce (x) effect
Or perhaps individual craft able rune consumables

This should be in the suggestion / idea section.
Okay, so did Vikings use magic? No seriously.
Norse mythology was seemingly based around "rune" magic. Where words, runes, held the power.
From what I can tell the mod basically you equip spells, or runes, that you craft from defeated bosses and other materials. You have a limited mana bar, and the spells themselves have cool-downs for the more powerful spells. I was planning on trying it out this weekend since I will have more free time. But the mod has had magazine articles about it and it's supposed to be very well balanced with the game.
Not sure if it's so much a suggestion as just, again, wondering if that the mod being so popular was going to see an official adaption of some sort for a magic system.

they were pretty tough, and it's not easy to prove for sure that they didn't.. i say if anybody could cast fireballs it was the vikings.. maybe none of the English monks at the time reported it because everyone knew vikings could belch fireballs.. it was just assumed.. viking = fireballs to the face..

Vikings had shamans, which has been RPG butchered over the years to make humans think it is a spell caster.
We will never be spell casters.
As for fireball belching... give me some 151 and a zippo and I can show you how it is done. ;)

there's just as much evidence that vikings were lvl 7 fireball mages as for anything else claimed about them recently in revisionist history. Add magic!

get that Harry Potter @$%^ outta here!
Seriously though - Have not seen anything mentioning spell casting.
Rune powers, Shamans, cultists and theire lovely fire blasts, draugr and skeleton spawners, surtling and fire...
and the list goes on.
While we do not have access to using all things magical, we do have some and using the run powers could be considered casting.
So while its not harry potter in the sense you seem to have such intense distaste for, we do have magic.
But whether or not the developers intend for players to use more magical means of things in the form of casting spells outside of rune powers remains to be seen.
My guess at this point is that most likely there wont be as this would render most of the current progression for armor and weapons etc less impacting to the game or not at all.

i guess it could be implemented, but imho it should be done with great restraint.
example: a staff that lets you lob a far more powerful version of the fuling shaman firebolt, but with very high cooldown and/or expensive ammunition (one surtling core recharges 5 shots perhaps)
....come to think of it, only a big cooldown would keep it in check, as it really doesn't take much to make a surtling farm....
Ok then let's say you get X shots per day and that's it, like old style D&D.
and make every staff require a compoment sold by Haldor at like 1k, so people don't make a ton. Or make a global CD. Man i'm brainstorming here...

i think we may see player spell casting.. could see catapults and ballistas
and stuff like that eventually as well.. maybe gunpowder, who knows.. we've only seen about 20% of what they consider final product, if their version numbering means anything.. so this is just the tutorial part that introduces the basic game mechanics.. sort of like leveling a WoW toon to level 20 back when 100 was cap.. but in this game advancement means technology, so i assume they are aiming for higher tech, which means machines and probably magic because why not.. it's obviously pretty doable with the engine..

I'm not trying to dispute your saying of the 20% of their final product but I'm just wanting to find an official dev source in order to cite that to others as that would be interesting to track for future citing purposes.
As for siege weaponry, I'm highly skeptical of that given that there seems to be more folks who play in single player and most others otherwise cooperatively with the pvp considerations a very low demographic given the way the game is currently implemented.
When it comes to player advancement and the "technology" used, it is important to understand that feature creep is one of the major ways to cause a game to become a mess. I think the devs reasonably understand this and aren't looking to make the game become so feature creep oriented.
You cited wow and even their devs have often discussed, and altered the game due to feature creep.
But keep in mind that's an mmorpg where as Valheim isn't. It isn't a great comparison to use em.

Frost weapons are already magic. Summoning bosses and using portals are magic.
The fireside chat hinted at the devs trying something different for Mistlands, but nothing so out there that it no longer looks like Valheim. So, maybe some minor magic stuff, but I doubt it will be Harry Potter.

i hope if "magic" finds its way into valheim it might be a viking themed "magic" thing
like runes and support from the gods ( like summon a lightning strike from thor"
things like fireballs and stuff is not what i expect here
*burns a witches hat*
still enjoy the one of a kind approach of valheim and i would not like to mess with the stuff every game has - that would destroy the flair imho
