You're not forced to reset your world. The Upgrade World mod[http//%5Burl%3Dhttps] can help you update your world and generate ice caves even where on already explored mountains.
It can also generate the removed old Mistlands and more. Available on Vortex mod and Thunderstore mod manager.

Also while the vanilla game might never have sophisticated world regeneration options there are already third party tools to fix this problem, either by repopulating the landscape or exporting your bases to a new save.

Ok, thank you very much for such an extensive explanation.
I'm obviously at point 5 and I'm afraid, in light of your answer, I should stay there because I hate starting from the beginning.
Again, thank you very much.
I think you misunderstand.
For example: we had ice caves implemented back months ago.
On maps that I had already explored mountain biomes, icecaves did not spawn.
On maps that I had cleared around the edges of mountains, 40% spawned caves after the update(again the map fog and the rendered by the game's considerations are different and this was well discussed after and before the update to many people.
On maps I never explored, the mountains, all caves spawned appropriately.
My character and its progress never ever had to start from the beginning.
This is all intentional by the devs so people -dont- have to start all over. There are no wipes in other words.
On the map that had explored stuff and x base, it was no biggie for me just to add another map(think like its a portal) and play on the new one post ice caves update. I just build a new base or two, move stuff from one map to the other if I wanted etc.
But my character still retained all the progress as before.
That is fantastic. It's just what I wanted to know and I didn't explain myself well.
Thank you very much.

Turn off Steam Cloud Save feature. Do backups of your save game folder which you can find here (for Windows):
The folder "AppData" is initially hidden and needs to be made visible. Let us know if you need help with that. I highly recommend backing up ALL your important data, as data corruption and crashing computers IS a thing.
External hard drives are cheap these days. Probably cheaper than recreating all your important data.
In over 700 hours of playing I only had one data corruption issue and that was with Steam Cloud Save turned ON.
C:\Users\YOURUSER\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim

The map is large, in my primary single player world I use a "half the map" rule where I don't visit the southern half of the map. Although thinking about it an east-west-split might make more sense.

Each has own view on whats fun, but I used to think that way and overtime my techniques changed and what I thought I could not part with was just a stepping stone to grander things.

I've survived over 500 days on my own world (maybe it's not much or not little, I don't know lol), and it's the only one I've had since starting the game shortly after its EA launch. Save corruption can obviously be a big issue, but it's never affected me during this time, maybe I've just been lucky. It's also possible to take backups of your world and character data just by copying files in AppData, if I'm not mistaken. I've also had good fortune in that I've always managed to find the new additions to existing biomes relatively easily (tar pits and frost caves), so even that experience can be subjective. :)

If you mean does updated areas (like mountains with ice caves) not update if you've explored/rendered those areas on the map, then that's really not ever gonna happen.
Most people thus understand that if you have concerns about that you can:
1. Not get even remotely close to those areas on a map (like mistlands when it releases).
2. Start a new seed map when an update happens (like many do) and consider it an exploration map or boss fight map(if applicable) etc.
3. Use the exact same seed as you are using now but just with a different name(you can do this many times) and following point 2 from there.
4. Use modded content to sort out the issue but with risk of loss(ie if you built over such a spot as an icecave was you may lose it.)
5. Wait to play the game when content is completely done and finished. Since devs though have said for the time being that they've plans for more content and potentially free dlcs in the future, that's probably not going to happen, you may just want to try points 1-4 if you actually want to play.
6. File corruptions tend to not happen much for now and if you encounter it, just report it to the devs so they can help ensure its not something on their end and fix it if it is.
But even if it did, using admin commands you can recoup losses on a new save in a very short amount of time. Also it helps to limit fear of corruptions by limiting use of mods(or not at all).
