I usually have better luck on the larger mountain areas when looking for silver.

There are ways to find silver without the wishbone, but it's a painfully slow trial/error.
While in the upper mountains, you wack the Stagbreaker on the ground. If you have small gray zeros it means you've wacked something very hard under your feet. It might be silver. Or not. I tried that method but it was too slow. And I only found silver once. And it took hours. (I was lazy and didn't want to battle the Bonemass, which I did finally).

You'll need an Iron Pickaxe just to mine Silver but there is a trick to finding it without the Wishbone. Take either the Stagbreaker or the 2h Iron Hammer and when you slam the ground if you happen to see the message; Too Hard from the surrounding ground when you strike it's very likely there's buried Silver there.

yeah you have to kill bonemass first lol. he'll drop the wishbone and when you take it to the mountains it will pulsate when youre above a silver vein

Lol sorry, I just assumed you already took out Bonemass. Be sure to craft some poison resist mead for that fight. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have iron armor and a mace with you also.

Don’t just have wishbone in inventory - you need to equip it. Try the nearest mountain to the standing stones (where you hang boss trophies)

You get the wishbone from killing Bonemass, the 3rd boss. You equip it like other players have said, and It makes a noise when "treasure" or silver veins are nearby. The more frequent the noise and the higher the pitch, the closer you are to the "treasure" or silver vein. This applies to all zones I believe, but in the mountains I think it just detects silver veins, elsewhere it could be a chest with random items. Also, you may have to dig kind of deep before you hit anything. It's random. I've hit silver after as few as 2 hits with my pickaxe and sometimes it takes closer to a dozen hits.

Frost arrows are good against BoneMass so all that time in mountains before taking him on is not wasted.
