The devs were appropriately good/evil when designing the tamed creature behavior.
First off I've tamed and raised hordes of boars and wolves. Boars are pretty easy but absolutely stubborn and like to drive you insane with their weaselly maneuvering. I've found if I make a fenced path from Point A to Point B they will often just walk it without being pushed. The wolves seem a bit easier since you can do the Stay and Follow commands.....but when Following they are like the worst dogs ever when they see a "shiny object". When I move wolves to a distant base I usually take 4 so that at least 2 survive most of the time. If you run into a troll or any Plains critters the wolves are usually toast. In the Swamp I have to clear the way with lots of arrows before the wolves spot anything or it's buh-bye. The youtubes of players roaming with large packs of wolves would be just as accurate if the wolves were cats
As a mitigating factor is possible with both boars and wolves for a medium to low level player to construct a breeding factory that will spew out torrents of piggies and wolf cubs.
My lox breeding count is still under 100. I'm Iron Age so I have no lox saddle. Moving them is all pushing, pushing, pushing and then you need to push some more.
Right now I'm focusing on lox as I've found a small island with 75% Plains, 5% Black Forest and 20% Meadows. As you can probably guess the Plains section had a lox spawn. This is my second 'lox farm' in the game but the 1st one was completely walled in and covered with a roof to keep the Deathsquitos out. I have about 10-11 lox in it and they are just livestock - meat and hide. The breeding pair was at one end of the 'barn' and I'd push the baby lox into an area far enough away to not block the mating process. I mean, who wants their kids around when they're doing it? I don't have a harpoon so pushing was the only way to move them but after awhile you get the knack. Pro-tip: If they're frightened don't even bother trying to move them - it's freakout time for them.
On this new island I began the breeding process just like the first time with the two freshly tamed lox in a dedicated enclosure and a connected 'nursery' that I'd push the baby lox into until they were ready for the outside world. With this small island I'd decided to set them 'free' once they were adults and see if I could get a big enough population to stomp the crap out of the Fulings and Deathsquitos. Black Forest and Meadows critters weren't even a poor match for the lox but Fulings and Squitos were more evenly matched.
This story is longer than I had envisioned.......
Right now I have 10 free roaming lox and a baby lox born out on the Plains. When I'm at this base my full time job is to run around, pick up the drops from the mobs they've stomped and feed them food to heal their wounds. So far 2 adults and one baby have succumbed to this uncontrolled environment.
It is kind of fun to run out at night when the Fuling spawns pick up and face their onslaught with my giant lizard faced companions - but it does get a bit tedious. I feel like a minimum wage worker at a busy fastfood restaurant on a Saturday night. I've taken to portal away before dark so activity stops in that area unless I feel like a fight and some lox triage.
It's hardly taken any time on this island to fill a chest with black metal scrap (that I can't even process) and needles for arrows. As far as the Meadows or Black Forest critters that spawn on that island they don't last any time at all. Need some eyeballs or neck meat?
If I had a complaint it is the constant maintenance of the lox's health that drags me down. So what am I to do? Build a wolf factory of course! LOL
Maybe the combined talents of the two species will reduce the impact of the Fulings and Squitos. Until I get the ability to make a lox saddle it's a bit much to build a lox factory like you see on youtube. With 20 meters of separation needed the idea of pushing a full grown or baby lox up a lot of ramps is not on my bucket list.
Anyway, I think the devs did a good job of balancing the behaviors of the tameable creatures. Each species has it's pros and cons and it's up to the player to figure out how to best make use of them.

i just use a mod that makes tamed pets essential and non-kill-able. I have no interest in making Valheim breeding factories just to progress as that does not feel very Valheimy - like would a viking do that? But I am more into exploring and world building so to each their own.

We transported our lox to a meadows, black forest island, with no plains or swamp. There is a small mountain biome in the centre, but it does not spawn any mountain biome creatures.
The lox now have no enemies that can kill them. Lox were just as easy to transport via longship as were wolves. One just has to make sure to stay away from shore so the lox don't agro to any greydwarves or deer. Other than the fact that the lox have nearly denuded the area of trees chasing deer (we do not keep them in a pen, but let them free roam), this has turned into an asset. Every time I portal to the island, I have lots of deer & greydwarf parts to pickup that the lox have killed, as I am distributing food for the lox. The only downside is that there are no cloudberries there to harvest, but the fact that I now have more than just a lox farm there outweighs that minor drawback. I now have a ready source of harvestable deer and greydwarf parts, I do not have to kill to obtain.
Lox get stronger the older they get, and the lox on the island are so numerous and strong that even trolls do not pose much of a threat.
