Paid mods?
In light of Iron Gates recent statement on mods, I'm curious what paid mods even exist - and if any of them are actually any good.
I'm also curious about these mods that apparently download themselves from Valheim servers, causing arbitrary code to run on a client machine sounds like a massive security breach in their server code.

There's a mod that adds more weapons and more crafting tables but it gates access to Deep North and Ashlands tier weapons and crafting stuff by using the same code that prevents people without the "DLC" from wearing the Odin stuff.
I'll not name it, don't feel like pointing people toward it.

Other games has that feature too.
Why it is at your own risk.

Yeah, that mod is pure ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. There is a mod that does the same but better, and it is free.

the statement is pretty clear. they do not guarantee mod support. the frown on mod creators charging for mods. they are ok with people supporting mod creators as long as a donation is not required to use a mod. use at your own risk. people who host servers may have mods set up that download, if you join that server so beware.

wait its a mod that locks people out of their own game content if they dont pay up if they want to use the mod? ive been away from the game for awhile so im a little confused as to the specifics There's a mod that adds more weapons and more crafting tables but it gates access to Deep North and Ashlands tier weapons and crafting stuff by using the same code that prevents people without the "DLC" from wearing the Odin stuff.

It has content for the older zones but, as I recall, the extra content in the mod for the Mistlands zones is not available unless you pay the mod author.

There are several mods that lock the better part of their content behind patreon subscription. I will not advertise them here, if you want them use google.
I don't have a problem with paying for some cool extra content. Some of those guys are doing great work and investing a lot of time and resources in their mods.
The only problem I have with those paid mods is that they are based on monthly subscription and in the end I will give more money to modders than to developers. And it just doesn't feel right.

There are HUNDREDS of modders who mod for games like Sims 4, Fallout 4, etc. and it's all behind a paywall aka patreon or itch.io

As far as I am concerned, the "Statement" is completely valid, and I 100% agree (for reasons of principal more than economics), that paid mods shouldn't be allowed. I think most people see the devotion these modders have and think "Wow these guys really have some passion for the game" already; trying to gain a value beyond that trespasses into the domain that you really need to be creating an alternative game (e.g. "Get a Job"), Copyright law is pretty plain and dry when it comes to Modding as a concept, all rights remain with the original owners/company.

Crappy move to lock content behind a paywall. But it does remind me of that old anti-drug commercial where the dad asks "Where did you learn this from?" and the kid replies "I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU!"

this is not exactly the case; itch.io does separate games, not mods, and that's what's locked behind a paywall. As for Patreon, its a donation-ware service, not intended to be used for primary payment; sadly, several games have taken it this way. Still both itch.io and the aforementioned Bethseda games like Fallout/Skyrim, include content that is still free, much of which is far and away better than what is paid for. Also Sims 4 afaik does not support "Paid Mods", they just release a lot of dlc which is...regrettable, but unavoidable in today's market. Most certainly the most offensive commercial in history ... in my time parents didn't do drugs :P Crappy move to lock content behind a paywall.
