How to get across a horribly inefficient moat

I've been playing with a few friends and we've been moving to a base in the Back Forest for various reasons. Because we don't want trolls always on our butt, we've been making a moat. But the friend who has been digging it has both made it too deep, far across, and enclosed, so now we have no way over without dying. Any ideas on how to keep enemies away while still being able to actually get in and out of the base?

Core wood beam works great. I've used that most often. I have tried moat, which really doesn't have to be any longer than a good long jump width and steep like everyone said above me. I found though that with that, occasionally they still pelt my fences with rocks. Bees at the corners tend to be good protection too. Next I plan on using both moat and earth wall up a bit higher so that the rocks can't hit so easy.

I'm not far enough along for flying critters yet, but I'm practicing some scaffolding building so maybe by the time I need to build anything in flying areas I can cover the whole place.

The beam doesn't even have to be core wood. Normal beams work too. I always have to replace them when trolls smash them though.

This is a nice, simple and clean solution.

However, if you want carts to go across as well, then you can do two core woods with a floor on them. You can also just build a fancy bridge that just doesn't quite touch the other end, so enemies won't cross, but the gap is still small enough that you can wheel a cart over it.

This just gave me a new idea. Sometimes enemies can crowd and push onto the core wood beam. I've had it happen and then the enemy gets stuck just walking back and forth on the core beam. The AI doesn't understand how to get off of it.

So my idea is, I'm going to use a ramp to get Greydwarves to walk onto a core beam, them remove the ramp and now I will have a dancing Greydwarf for my entertainment, just stuck on the core beam walking back and forth. If it's not an event spawn enemy, then it should be stuck there even after a save and reload.
Awesome! I'd better do that now, it'll be hilarious.

Thank you all!

Wood Doors in a line....open them to cross close them to prevent crossing.

The opposite of a moat an earthen wall. I just raised the ground all the way around my base as high as it would go about 3 ft thick at the top and about 6 feet thick at the bottom.

NO door/s!!!
Just sprint and jump/run straight up and over it.

Ended up almost maxing my run/jump skills by the time I had gotten the wall completed.

Only thing that might give it a problem are flying critters and there aren't many of those.

Fill in the moat with stone and hoe until it's the size you want or build a bridge across the moat with a gate at each end.

Here's mine. Not that big or fancy but it's kept many a Troll, Fulings, Blobs and Lox out. I've had to rebuild the outer gate a couple of times but nothing has gotten through the inner gate. Maybe it'll give you ideas to pursue.

Moats don't need to be deep or super wide to work. They just need a steep slope, maybe 3m deep, and 2 or 3m wide. Easy to jump or climb for players. Just fix a portion of your moat with the hoe.

You can also build a bridge, but leave one section out. Players can hop across and you can complete it to run a cart across and remove a section again later.

Thank you all! Hopefully this will make my friend realize what he's doing wrong.
