Snapping

So, I decided to give the game a shot.. but I get really really frustrated by the building system. The snapping specifically. Why does it feel like I have to aim with pixel perfection to get two pieces to snap together? Just something as simple as placing two walls on top of eachother just drives me nuts.

It's really, really bad. Hopefully they will add an optional setting that allows for easier snapping. The building itself is great, but getting stuff to snap where you want is a chore. When building high you can at least use makeshift scaffolding, but building low, especially in water is frustrating.

I found it much better in most other games like this I've tried. But then again, the game IS in early access to hopefully it will be improved.

I know that, and that's great in some cases but not when I actually WANT it to snap.

What I found is helping is focusing not on where you want to place the item, but to the ones you are latching them to. Granted it is not the way I am used to in other games, but it helps while waiting these mechanics to be improved.

Yeah, that makes it slightly less painful. Game has a long way to go both mechanically and contentwise.

most other games dont even refund resources after a miss-snap, so far this has been one of my favorite building experiences

To be fair it only refunds half for things like walls and floors. And in most games you can move items so you don't have to worry about refunds.

pretty sure its a full refund, unless a damaged structure or bug prevents that

I'll test it later but when building, I often tear things down to try different approaches and I always run out of wood before I place the same amount of walls. I'm talking fresh builds, not weathered items. I do know that it refunds full rare items, like core wood, surtling cores etc. either way, most games allow you to move items which makes the refund thing a chore more than a feature.

It's definitely about putting the cursor on the point you want to attach something to. Pieces have several points they can snap to and it can be fiddly figuring out the point you want but it's easy enough after a while.Only consistently difficult snap is when trying to attach something below yourself. You really need to be lower than the point you want to attach something to. It's possible from above but so much easier from below which I guess is because you cannot get the cursor over the point you want to snap to because you cannot actually see it.

It's a nightmare if you want to fill in a small hole just below a wall or something, you need pixel perfect aim and even then it might not be enough.
Or if you're trying to put another half wall just below a wall (because supposedly the continuation of the wall is floating), you're going to have a lot of trouble placing it.

I had an issue with it also until I started to use posts to frame out my structures before a build. It's easier to go horizontally then vertically.
