Why The Hype?
I bought the game on this weekend and I do like it a lot. It's a very good survival game, but I don't see where all the hype is coming from. I mean Valheim is great, but it's just as great as some other survival games that never got this type of attention when they came out. So, where is this coming from?

Combine what I said with Vault Traveller and there's your answer.
Dirt cheap and it came at the right time... Everyone was sitting at home with nothing to do. That... and the fact it is a charming game.

In short: This is where preferences come in.
You may have opinions about:
- The setting (norse mythology)
- The graphics (low textured, nice effects)
- Gameplay (unforgiving from time to time, with great depth)
- Base building and creativity
- Resource gathering
- Solo/coop, PVP/PVE
- It being Early Access
- Comparing it to other games (expectations)
We can argue but not always agree. If you find things you dislike. Its not bad taste or means the game is bad. It's a difference in opinions :)

I don't get the point of this topic.
What hype? The word "hype" is overused. The simple answer is that a lot of people like it. So what are people supposed to do? Not make reviews? Not talk about a game they like? Not play the game?
Guess what? I also liked Minecraft. I also like ESO, King's Bounty Darkside, M&M Darkside of Xeen, and Bejeweled 3. A lot of people talk about those games too at one time or another. Did you go to their forums and asked what the big hype was too?
PS: You're 'hyping' it up, by asking what the hype is... ;)

When Valheim was released, there definitely was a hype around it. Not built by the developers, but by the players... which is the best hype you can get.

Lockdown, and the potential people saw in it. Relative to the other similar games, from what I've been told from a few people that have played other survival crafting games, Valheim seemed to have the most potential out of the gate. Basically Valheim seemed more polished at the start, which excited them as there's a good chance it'd become even better over time, so if you see something that's a 7/10 or 8/10 at the beginning of Early Access you'd be more invested knowing it could possibly become better and even gain a point on that scale.
Keep in mind, this is coming from people I've talked to, there could be a bias and this might not be general opinion and not why this game enjoyed so much popularity. I'd reckon a good amount of people are in this camp though, even if it may or may not be the majority. I'd imagine the amount of people who do nothing but talk ♥♥♥♥ about the game on these forums would be smaller if people didn't have expectations of it due to how strong the game is out of the gate.

Personally I feel the term hype came to be here more so because a lot on console players have moved to doing more pc gaming. Hype is used more in console gaming from what I've seen and seems to keep being brought up in game genres for PC that don't really have a use for the term.
Look at this have for instance. Look how much hype is thrown around, or the concern for player numbers, which have no effect on Valheim really (other than negativity when people flock to it and see it isn't what they expected, due to hype). It's all about sales.

Having a living and breathing village full of people with different needs, wants, and jobs with a lot of QoL improvements that other survival games lack is mostly what made Valheim big. That and a completely different setting than normal with goals and bosses. Everyone in a village needs things to survive, especially surviving raids. Groups need to go out for materials sometimes because it's easier, safer, and fun, that kind of thing.
QoL things like getting all your materials back when you demolish things are pretty big.

A friend told me about it and the viking setting and art style is what drew me in. I actually hated the idea of cooking eating in the game. But I played it and food is my biggest love in this game oh and sailing/exploring the uncharted lands.

Some of you don't seem to like the word "hype". I used it because Valheim got an unbelievable amount of attention from the players and the media, it was hugely popular when it came out. Now, I understand, thanks to your replies, that when released Valheim proved to be extremely polished and enjoyable game. But I couldn't have imagined it would make such a ruckus.
Even now, with the Hearth and Home update, the game is being played by 80k+ people which is, in my opinion - unprecedented for an update that doesn't even feature a lot of new content.
Or is there something I don't know about Valheim? I mean, sure, there's co-op in the game, but what you're talking about sounds more like a settlement managment game =)

Village full of people? Groups? Are you sure you're not talking about Medieval Dynasty here?) I think the main things that made it popular is the different pace this game has and the discovery of how to do things as some of the mechanics in this game are kind of unique
