BRING BACK OLD TERRAFORMING

Pleaseeee for the love of god, bring back the old terraforming mechanic for raising the ground. The new one is sooo painful and extremely tedious.

I'm glad they fixed the exploit, and to some extend it's an improvement for raising large flat areas. I have a slightly different complaint, though.

I used it a lot for landscaping; making jagged rocky ridged and outcroppings that had a natural look. Now the tool seems more pragmatic for building, but I do miss the look of the old terraforming. Everything looks too chunky now imo.

I'd like to see a tool mode added to the hoe to get the old spiky behaviour back.

@Nwah: I saw what happened to teraforming when they brought the fix in. I also saw that it was a huge improvement to my PC, and friends PC.
(Mine running 45fps pre-patch, and friends running 15fps at best) Up to 90fps, and 30fps. I offer you to give Iron Gate your solution to better both worlds..

Maybe if extreme terraforming makes someones computer lag, they shouldn't do an extreme amount of terraforming. Then the people who can do it, can actually do it without the process becoming excruciating. That way, everyone is happy. The way it is, only one half is happy.

I don't understand how making the cost of stone higher and making the process more excruciating just to get the same result is improving the game.

I know nobody is allowed to criticize on these boards without getting dogpiled on, but you're not going to convince me that making it more difficult to get the same results is an improvement.

Because it was a bug. What don't you understand?
It's like if you could one shot a boss due to a bug I guess you would complain about them fixing it because having to actually fight the boss as intended was "making the process more excruciating just to get the same results".
If a single ore of iron incorrectly smelted into 1000 bars and they fixed it I guess you'd complain as well because of it "making the process more excruciating just to get the same results".
If a single arrow incorrectly did 10,000 damage because of a bug, same thing I guess, you'd complain that fixing it was "making the process more excruciating just to get the same results".

Except it wasn't incorrect, so your analogy is pointless. The hoe has a function, that function being "raise ground". It was, quite literally, serving its intended purpose. It just done it too well, and got severely gimped for the benefit of people with slower rigs. The same results could have been delivered with further optimisation but the nerf was a quicker solution. Much quicker.

I'm pretty sure in the patch notes for that update, they say "new terrain modification system" or something to that effect? But you're missing the larger point, people who liked to do a lot of terraforming were totally shafted by making the process an even bigger time and resource sink. That can't be argued with. Doing the same thing now costs 10x the amount of stone. Needlessly dragging the process out. But that's my bit, thanks for listening.

It was NOT functioning as the devs intended... they never intended for the ground to raise the max amount while only using enough stone to raise it one unit.... That was a bug that was exposed and exploited during gameplay by millions of people, and the devs fixed the un-intended mechanic.... That's what this phase of development is all about.

Sorry if that seems like a burden to you but it was an exploited bug and now its not.

+1 to this. They gimped the terraforming so badly with that update. Doubt they're going to go back though, sadly.

the old way was actually an exploit and never intended

So now bug fixing is bad?

Don't forget that the optimization of the teraforming mechanic was not JUST meant to change how cheaply you could raise the ground. Instead to increase performance on large, more developed bases...

"This patch has been taking extra long time to develop due to the new terrain-modification system. The new terrain modification system is made to reduce the number of network instances and make loading faster and smoother"

Yeah, but it just means to do the exact same thing, you have to spend way more time and resources.

So it dissuaded people from doing it as much, as opposed to just improving the coding and further optimisation.

Yeah, raising and lowering the terrain is a PITA. So the devs are expecting me to plan appropriately? How crass!

I'm new and I have a hard time leveling the ground. Would be nice to be able to level an entire section with a single click

You are likely already aware but by default the tool tries to match the level of the ground at your feet. So I you are standing on high ground and point it at lower it will raise, if you are standing at low ground and point to higher it will lower. Best to stand at the level you want and work outward in circles.

It was technically an exploit to raise the ground to max height for the cost of one ground raise. I'd say maybe they should just let you raise ground to max if you pay the full stone cost, but I'm pretty sure the dev team didn't envision using raised ground to avoid 95% of all danger. Not sure it's going to happen but maybe?
