a few major tips for newbies....

Plan ahead.

Going for a forage run? bring food.
Going for a timber run? bring a cart too (bronze is easy to get to fast)
Thinking about doing well, anything? eat food, bring food and preferably not foraged things but grown/hunted as foraged items are used for mead and hard to get in reliable numbers.

explore your entire starting island and mark out the locations for large berry areas, burial chambers, troll caves, copper and Greydwarf spawners. you can then click said markers again to indicate you've explored them.

Going for a voyage to a strange land? Build a spare boat and then a portal before you leave, don't bring your best gear, bring building materials for a portal, bed, 4x4 house.
Wanna fight a boss? have everything in your current tier upgraded already and build a camp close. If you find out that isn't sufficient then work on the next tier.

Build a buckler (round shield) and time your blocks. Majority of fights are easily won with good timing. and always use the environment to limit your encounters to 1v1

The raft is useless outside of not drowning in rivers imo too. Don't leave the spawning island until you have bronze tools and a Karve.

most important the best laid plans can go to waste.
expect and prepare to fail no matter what you're doing and always have a plan on how to remedy it. I do this by always having spare gear.

a lot of peoples frustrations seem to be tied to poor planning, i personally haven't had nearly as many issues as my fellow server members and preparation is the reason why so i hope this helps. I appreciate it takes longer to do what you want to do, but not as long as it takes dying 42 times otw back to your corpse.

I would love if others added what they wish they knew when they started.... with as little spoilers as possible :snaggletooth:

When you set out on a path of revenge you must first dig two graves.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Best way to avoid shaman with stink breath is dodge-roll. Can use it on slimes too but a little harder due to directional rolling into the swamp and narrow corridors in the crypts, but still worth it. I also dodge roll trolls if it's the overhead swing (parry side swings).

ngl peoples mismanagement of chests drives me insane hahahaha

I use signs to label most chests to keep things organized and speed up stashing new loot or grabbing what I need.

As for the OP, good tips for anyone, not only new players.

+1 to the op - the main issue is to underestimate the game and come badly prepared
Taking your time in this game is key

A few more:

If you die while adventuring, mark your tombstone on the map so you can still find it if you die again before looting it.

If chased by something you're not ready to fight, lure them towards other enemies. For example, a mob of grey dwarves will be distracted by skeletons. Fulings from neighboring plains will stop chasing you to attack anything from forest or swamp.

As mentioned above - a shield is a game changer. Learn it, don't be like I was in thinking they don't add much. Grey dwarf brutes make excellent sparring partners, they're slow and it's easy to follow their attack patterns, practice parrying wit them.

And along with parry, dodge-roll can save your life. Master it, the controls are a little janky for some, for me it became second nature once I stopped thinking of it as a separate action and instead used it as part of an overall right-click defensive stance.

Well said. Most of my mistakes (aside some RNG..and even with RNG, but still), are due to poor prep.

Hope people take your advice, so they can enjoy the game to its current end. Then I hope they really explore / master mechanics, so when the next update comes out, they can rock that ♥♥♥♥ like a hurricane. Make new builds , and all that.

Good post.

I can completely feel you on that one. Not sure how many conversations I had with her when we were playing MC (she plays on Iphone). There was always multiple different, unfilled, stacks of the same item. I'd have to often spend a good 10 mins rearranging things after she came back from expedition.

Worth those little quirks to play with good people though.

right? it's funny too because i am also the serpent slayer and scout. A lot of my friends are intimidated by the ocean in this game. That's also another reason in part that i posted this thread, because i want people to realise its one of the best parts.
