How common are crashes?
Been thinking about getting this for awhile now, but have always seen threads regarding people crashing and also losing all of their progress. How prevalent are these issue these days? Is this one of those game like Skyrim that are known to crash from time to time?

So far all my crashes have been at server log in and only if I'm playing on line. When I exit the game and try again I'm at my spawn point instead of where I last logged off.

I've never lost my world of 400-500 hours. Don't think I've experienced any crashes either.

There is currently an issue with Valheim and the Steam Cloud Save. A potential fix for that is currently on the Public Test Branch.
In the meantime, you can play with local saves and do manual backups. The pinned threads have info on that.

Turn off Steam Cloud globally in the Steam settings and you should be fine (really, this goes for all Steam games with cloud save capability).
Once you turn that off, you should have no issues if your PC is working fine otherwise.

From what you can probably gather, even in early access the base game is notably stable with most crashes being due to either conflicting mods, online features or our own dumbness.
Sure, I have had a few crasshes, usually because of the third reason. However, 1 crash for every 200-400 hours of gaming is really stable nowadays.

The game used to be rock-solid stable for me, I haven't played it for a while and now came back 5-6 months later and it has frozen completely on me two times within an hour.

The only time my game has ever crashed was when I was logged on a rented server or my own internet died. It's always been very stable for me. EDIT - It HAS crashed when I had a mod conflict but that's my fault, not the the game.

I have around 1350 hours in. I crashed one time back in 2021 on a 4 player dedicated server when I tried to run the game using Vulcan. It did roll back an hour or so of exploration. This was also when I was using a circa 2015 Acer laptop with a 940mx and 2 gb of vram.
I have since built a gaming rig. No trouble at all with crashing or with losing progress.

Actual game crashing/freeze
I have had it happen only a couple of times.
The freeze crashes I had seemed to be map issues ... going to the same map spot would crash it reliably.
Crash crash out of nowhere once...
These issues I noticed over a year ago. In the last year and the lions share of my 2000hrs/30 some worlds have been crash free.
I do not mod my game.
Win10
GTX 1070
16gig ram
I 5
I may have lost a couple of hours in those crashes, but overall meaningless issue and I didn't know about the .old files you could rename.<or whatever the backups are called>
If your machine has any weak points the game may make those obvious.

Only time I ever had a problem with crashes was when testing out Vulkan mode a year and a half ago. Three crashes in a ten hour experiment before going back to regular graphics. Never had a crash since.

in the 850+ some hours I've played the only time I've had the game crash on me was right after an update that one of my mods conflicted with. I removed the mod and the game started right up again. And I'm running Valhiem on Linux using Proton so my system config is already on the edge of what IG testes against.
I would say the game is actually very stable over all and any issues with crashing that other people are commenting about are usually caused by something uniuqe to their hardware and OS. A video driver, antivirus, a malware infection, corrupted OS library, etc.
The devs do test before they release an update but they can't test against all possible configurations so there will always be the odd fringe cases where the game just flat out isn't stable for someone.
If your hardware is mainstream standard with an updated OS and clean filel system you shouldn't have any problems.

My number of crashes is less than one per hundred hours and fortunately I haven't lost any serious progress as a result.
Those were both over a year ago so the game should be more stable in theory, however I was never able to reproduce whatever caused those crashes to begin with.
Overall it has been impressively stable. Manual save backups have always been a possibility and just recently they have been working toward implementing in-game backup features.

Not really. Most of the crashes I've experienced are due to some mod I've installed not working right and those will happen well before you've played for very long.
You'd do better to make sure you back up your save files.

I suppose it depends heavily on your PC. I think i've had one crash ever and i've played a decent amount.
