Mods: You're damned if you do; you're damned if you don't

Valheim is truly an amazing game. But...

I’ve played the game with my friends a lot. But at some point in the game you’re overwhelmed by the completely unnecessary obstacles you keep running into - not having slots for armor/weapons, sorting loot in crates all the time, look through all containers when having to craft things, just to mention a few.

The pain associated with these outright ridiculous things lowkey pressures you into using mods -- and the next thing you know is that everything you’ve grinded is gone, your gear is gone, your base disappears. It is ridiculous.

We’ve stopped playing this game simply for these reasons, because it feels like we’re spending more time damage controlling and looking for the right mods instead of actually playing the game. I REALLY hope the devs implement some of these basic things soon. We will gladly play again when these things become implemented in the game.

PS: Making a game difficult is a great way to make a game engaging and challenging, but I think having an eye for when difficulty becomes constraint is very important for sustaining flow during gameplay.

PPS: OK, some constructive criticism - it would be nice to see:
- ability to craft from nearby containers
- ability to sort-control containers so you can dump everything into one.
- weapon/armor slots,
- balance bronze smelting, so 2xCopper+1xTin = 3xBronze
- Make planting/harvesting easier by enabling ability to seed 5x5 rows instead of single seed at the time
- perhaps up-cycling things you've crafted and get half of the materials back OR enable ability to regret a craft for 10 seconds in case you've made the wrong item

Relating to your last question, we've spend quite a bit of time cutting and sorting things for the individual containers. More time than i think should be nessesary honestly. I do think a reconsideration of base storage would be appreciated by many players. Sometimes its the small things in life <3

All things considered, when they continuously add more bioms, players will have to manage more and more differing items. At some point it becomes a bit unsustainable.
I agree 100% with everything you've said. I don't have anything else to add besides kudo's for putting together a constructive, well-posed post.

Thank you, very much appreciated!

Fair point. I don't use mods, but there are pain-points in the base game that could use some player control. I'd like to create the difficulty I am looking for.

The complaints you mentioned can be solved by using in-game signs for organizing loot effectively or as you said, downloading .. 1, 2... 2 mods. If you're taking more time to find 2 mods to solve your issues with the game then I don't think this is the genre of game for you. Survival/crafting games always place emphasis on inventory management.

And you're not damned if you use mods. The modding community is super tight on updating their mods in preparation for a game update.

Disclaimer: iron gate doesnt officially support or encourage mods. Back up save and world data before using mods. Iron gate is not responsible for data lost from using mods.

I suppose everyone has their own tolerance levels for inventory management and logistics when it comes to games, but personally I've not had as strong a reaction to the points you mention.

As it relates to slots for armor/weapons, I see that as simply a functional request that the player's inventory be larger. I typically just streamline what activity I'm doing that I don't wind up with inventory clutter or carry around items I don't really need. Mixing that with a variety of outposts with portals in areas where I collect loot and it's not really a problem to store items with the space the player's inventory currently has.

For crafting, I just tend to put containers in access range of the crafting station being used to minimize going around having to search for things.

For every 10 hours you spend playing Valheim, how much of it are you spending on inventory management?

I get the point with the signs, and i did use them rigorously. inventory management is obviously a part of this game no doubt, but there are a lot of things to deal with, but it would not hurt to make the process a bit more streamlined to mitigate the inevitable tediousness of it all.

Not having slots for armor/weapons is just straight up bush-league. Diablo had that in 1997.
