Agreed, a friend and I encountered 5 serpents in one trip just going about our day to day business

Not really a delicacy when you're on a large server where we can have someone hunting serpents whenever they're able to

Again not been my experience. I get you that its a bit unnerving to see "Its not taking the bait" when you can see the type of fish you are baited for right in front of you, amongst others.

But that Pike or Tuna or whatever is: NOT taking the bait. So wait and the "right" fish will take a nibble and with a click you can start hauling it in.

You are right there is little reason to fish outside one area until there is more reason to do so, IE recipes. The hat is insufficient. The angler fish recipe is a great start but disproportionately hard to get for its effect.

Fishing used to be fun. You could actually catch fish, cook the fish and then eat the fish without a cauldron. By the time you have the cauldron fish is a waste of time until the burritos. Dumb change, just dumb. The fun in fishing has been removed.

Watching for wriggling fish, not wriggling fish, fish using up all stamina while not wiggling but game gets confused. Too much time spent for one lousy level one fish at a time. Even less fun is just standing somewhere throwing the line, pulling in the line over and over and over and over to get a few levels. You actually make fewer levels if you catch a fish because the leveling is just from pulling in. Not actually getting levels from catching fish? Yeah that makes equal nonsense kind of sense. Sad times. Best fishing is finding fish on the shore &/or building a fish farm as noted above. Sorry, rant of disappointment in the changes.

The new system once you get the gist of it is TOO EASY that's not an improvement I grant you. But its doable, the selections decent at 12 species with multi star variations for a touch of spice. As with everything skills levels are pretty irrelevant so who cares. As I said above took a couple of hours gained about 15 levels completed the whole 12 fish goal for the Hat. Naturally I was lucky I knew where to get Tetras but that's not a skill issue RNG smiled on me their.

The lack of recipes is just gotta be something they'll address. (Please god!)

Foxglove makes an excellent point on the weird counter intuitive reversal of requiring a cauldron to get raw fish.. totally wrong! All they needed to do was add the raw fish recipe to the handcraft one and problem solved. Using the cauldrons just lazy design.

Systems OK as it stands but obviously unfinished I think we ought to reserve judgement ill the point they say "This is its finished form"

For now get a rod cash in a few Trophy's for bait have a few hours fun.

Our ideas of fun vary I believe. Though fun is hard to quantitate, for me this isn't much fun. My issue is not that's it's easy or not easy. At low level it is in fact not easy to get that fish. Take off the hat, only have low level gear and foods. Well, fishing has been improved. Recently, and this is what we got. Then they fixed it a bit more to add the wriggling fish. So that is two improvements. Don't imagine they are going to bother with it again. At least at this point I hope not. Not sure we can stand many more "improvements".

Then comes the next annoyance. It matters not which bait you have if you are not in the meadows. Whatever it is, the other fish is biting. See pikes? Put on the meadows bait. No hookage. See trollfish, put on that bait and then pike jump. Don't forget ocean fish. So now need 3 kinds of bait if you're lucky. KK, got that. Then every kind and every level of fish has it's own stackage. Ok, well now we have the pole, the 3 kinds of bait and then you get a couple fish and guess what... out of room. I'm sorry, it's just dopey design.

There should at least be a fishing creel which carries all the fishing sheet. If you're not in the meadows it's not like you get to leave your weapons home and wander over there with a really free inventory.
And frankly every new higher level bait should catch all the fish up to that level. Or at least have only fresh water and salt water fish baits. Am waiting for them to have new high level poles so we have to carry multiples of them too. Sheesh, makes little to no sense to do any fishing other than in the meadows. Counterintuitive silliness.

Sometimes it feels fishing is easier with a boat/ship than with a fishing pole, since fish can, and frequently enough do, literally jump in.

Definitely seconding the stamina mead on a hotkey suggestion.

To add a bit more life to the game I recently used mods to add more land animals as well as sea creatures and birds. I've killed bears, moose, sharks, swans, capybara and so on, so it's nice to have the impression the world is more alive as well as extra food. I haven't been out at sea on my current map yet, having killed the sharks in the shallows, but I hope the seas are nicely populated too. :) If you're interested in more wildlife to hunt, do a search for "animals" on https://valheim.thunderstore.io/package/ which also turns up a mod for farmyard animals, too.
