Running through the plains, I always assume a deathsquito is stalking me. 80% of the time I am right.
Hear the buzz, block attack, then swing. Works every time--assuming you are geared for it.
When blocked, they pause for a second and it is a perfect time to counter. Don't need to parry. Just hold up the shield and they bump into it and wait a second for you to hit them.
Save their skeeter tails, tho. Your archer will thank you.

Are you braindead? OP clearly said they haven't defeated the third boss yet and just discovered Plains. Literally none of your solution are available. Maybe learn to read before acting like a jerk.

Yeah, aside from that the starting central island will typically have only plains, black forest and possibly mountains and/or swamp, the next island or two over could potentially have some plains, especially given the 2nd or 3rd boss could be located a few islands over. The map is by no means linear in nature where you're guaranteed to be introduced to the biomes in order. The second biome I found in my first game was Mountains. :)

they are easy to hear when getting close, i use shield on the attack and then knock it down, easy when you learn the ways, also bow has mention above if you spot them from distance

those are the plains, not the new area...
and don't try the block & stab unless you have a really good block rating. It will kill you trying that in a low level shield.

Deathsquitoes have very low health. Shoot them from afar, or as they fly straight at you.
