Why is my roof exploding?
Built a large building out of stone with iron support beams, it's been standing without issue for several hours, but it recently started raining and all of a sudden random pieces of the roof started breaking. Sometimes it's large chunks at the top, other times it's a few pieces that are underneath others. It's getting really frustrating because I just spent the last several hours finishing it and now it's falling to pieces. None of the supports have broken. Is rain really doing that much damage to stone?

I think I fixed it, I had to rearrange the iron supports in the picture, add a another ring of them closer to the middle, and knock a layer of bricks off the dome, but it seems to be holding now. Fingers crossed.
Sadly no, the whole dome structure completely collapsed, the pic I got was from right before the whole thing fell. Also no, I hadn't been doing any terrain manipulation before this. could you post a screen shot from day time? perhaps from a few angles? the other it's difficult to see what's going on.
did you have trees around your base that are no longer there? or raised or lowered the terrain?
Seems weird that it would take so long for it to calculate, it stood for about 3 in-game days before anything started to break, and that was after the rain started falling. Only thing I was doing before the rain started was attaching some supports to the outer walls for decoration. On thing to keep in mind is as you place pieces it takes time for the game to calculate the structural integrity. So if you build or place pieces fast they may show green but change to red after some time as it calculates things.
Should've known not to trust Haldor's "special discount," on lumber... Cheap materials. You shouldn't have used discount lumber.

As others have said, support is the key. If you can get your basic structure (especially the parts supporting anything of altitude) built out of iron wood poles you should have many less problems.
I commonly cover the wood iron poles and beams with the darkwood equivalents to hide the wood iron poles.

This is with no mods affecting structures.

You can use this to quickly place pieces that wouldn't stay up individually, but are capable of supporting each other when they're all in position. Subtle terrain changes is a good call. It's very easy to plant some carrots and accidentally disconnect what turns out to be a key foundation stone from the ground.

It was yellow and green, with orange at the very top level of the dome. But after the rain stopped the entire roof, supports and dome were all orange and red. What color is the stone when you place it? Blue, Green, Orange, Red? If its orange or red, that could be your issue, there's not enough support to keep it in place. If its blue or green, then, I don't know, it would be some other kind of issue or a bug maybe?

Are you using a roof, or trying to use stone as a roof? Because the game doesn't recognize most build objects as roofing, and they deteriorate in the rain. If you're also doing something that pushes stability limits, it won't take much deterioration to fall apart.

Worst case scenario, center pillar from the ground (or top of another roof directly beneath) up to the center of where you are building the roof and then build out to the edges from that. Might be misaligned so you might have to play with it some.

When building with stone, one can place core-wood vertical poles IN THE GROUND first, to greatly increase vertical stability. Placing core-wood poles right inside the stone (place the poles, then the stone right into the core-wood), is an amazing stablilizer and more economical than ironwood beams, but iron reinforced beams & poles are the best. One has to make sure the vertical support beams are entering the ground, and not just resting on flooring.

Is it just roofing tiles that are breaking or is stone breaking too?

It's the stone, I can't even place down replacements anymore without them breaking almost instantly. Really pissing me off, because I'm basically just stuck watch each piece break for no reason at this point. Is it just roofing tiles that are breaking or is stone breaking too?

This is basically what it looked like (after the exploding started). It was a dome structure that was open at the top. At this point the rest of the dome has pretty much collapsed completely.

Looks like you are just beyond building limit of stone alone, probably doesn't have a short enough path to ground. I would make sure your all your wood iron poles are tied into other wood iron poles and not just on the stone. Looks like a few of them at the top are only attached to the stone, I'd tie those in to the other wood iron poles so they have a path to ground. Looking at it closer, it looks like those areas are where all your breakages occurred.
