Are carts useful at all?
I looked at the wiki and it seems like a PITA to use. I would say "♥♥♥♥ it" and just craft one, but I'm poor.

If you're farming wood, stone, or metals at any distance away from your base its worth it imo. Instead of having to go back and forth between a bunch of times you just make one slower trip while dragging the cart behind you. Keep in mind you'll find it difficult to go up steep inclines and you'll have to avoid small rocks and stuff. You don't NEED one but they're nice to have and save you time.

Heck, when I use my cart when I'm farming wood at the nearest treeline or my tree farm.

things I use it for personally:
Early game was using it to cart copper/tin from the black forests nearby back to our base, as there is no weight limit to the cart itself and it has 4x2 inventory which is nothing to scoff at when hauling metal ore that weighs 10 a piece.
Mid/Late game I have one sitting by our dock on the opposite side of our island so when we come back with a literal boat load of iron/black metal/silver I can dock the boat and load it on the cart to transport the rest of the way to our base on the other side of the island
as to why we do it that way, it's much faster for us to do that than sail the boat around the entirety of our island

Yup, there's two different sizes of ships, a smaller faster one that can carry 4 slots of items and a larger Longboat that can carry 18 slots of items. I usually build my bases near an Ocean or inlet because mid and late game the Ocean becomes a highway for transporting metals. A Dock that can accommodate a small ship and a big ship if the base is just for me or for more than that if I'm playing with other people is fairly necessary.

You can build docks anytime. So boats scale with the resources. I wait until I can get the current best one, if possible. They are meant to be updating the ocean biome so maybe there are more boats to come!

Sailing mechanics are pretty good too. It's not Sea of Thieves but it's better than most.

3 boats, 2 of which have cargo room oh, later on you can build docks and cargo ships? this game is perfect for me :P
and the "dock" you just make yourself with the building stuff, and as you progress you'll get more building materials and such as well. but boats don't move at all unless someone is standing in them so it's as simple as making a structure in the water that you park the boat next to

You can actually make a road pretty easily with one of the tools making it a lot easier to drag the cart around and it can be handy if you need a lord or ore.

Hoe I believe does that, so long as you have stone You can actually make a road pretty easily with one of the tools making it a lot easier to drag the cart around and it can be handy if you need a lord or ore.

you only need stone to raise not to flatten or create path until you can make other path typesHoe I believe does that, so long as you have stone You can actually make a road pretty easily with one of the tools making it a lot easier to drag the cart around and it can be handy if you need a lord or ore.

in coop they are the best option to get a lot of stuff across the land fast since you can get a friend to sit on the cart and load him up way beyond the weight limit without changing his weight or the weight of the cart and therefore enabling you to still being able to pull it through rough terrain easily

Just be careful about where you make your dock and park your ships. They won't move if nobody is on them and stay put as soon as you exit the boat (this is a great strategy for hard-stopping your boat if you think you're about to hit something nasty or need to stop in a hurry, just jump out).
However... While the boat itself may not move, during storms the sea WILL. It will rise and fall quite dramatically in bad storms. You need to pay very close attention to what the shore is like and anchor your boat so that it is not in the water above any rocks or sunken logs or too close to shore. As the sea rises and falls your ship will smash into those rocks beneath it or ground itself out on the shore. This can (WILL) destroy your ship.
If you're close enough to shore it isn't a big deal as you can wade or swim out and gather up the materials and just remake the vessel. If the ship was too far out, you will only be able to collect what ever cargo was on the ship and the wood (wood floats).
Many a time have I thought I had parked my Karve in a good spot only to return and find that it has broken up on a rock I had parked it above after a hard storm. Not a great time.
As for the cart, they can be super useful at all points in the game. Slow and tedious at times, but much better than making ten trips back and forth any great distance. I've got the darn things all over the place. They do deteriorate due to weather (down to 50%) and can become damaged during use. To keep them at top condition I build little cart-houses for them; just a frame structure with a roof over it to keep them out of the weather.
