having trouble installing mods

i've been trying to install mods, but i don't know what to do. i'm on linux, so i cant download vortex normally, and the other way to download vortex just isn't working either.

i just need to know how to install mods manually, and weather its safe or not.

not sure where you check for mods. if its nexus, most mods explain how to manually install.
bepinex what i needed for alot of mods also explains how to use it with linux and is most of the time linked in the mods aswell.

bepinex is an open source project and safe to use
most nexus mods alsoif you are really paranoid wait for mods that got released like today.

but backup your saves like the others said.
the mods will probally not ruin your pc, but could break saves.
(didnt see that happen yet)

just get r2 mod manager from thunderstore since its easier than nexus and since u cant use vortex.

One of the best places for Linux/Valheim/mods problems and questions is the 'official' Valheim discord server. They've got channels for 'Linux' and another for 'mods'. There's lots of helpful folks over there. Here's the address: https://discord.gg/valheim

Mods are not supported by Valheim, so use at your own risk.

There's no guarantee that anything official will ever be safe, and mods aren't officially supported. It's your risk to take, I'd make backups of characters & world files. And any other backups, if you're worried it might tank your system.

On windows it's as simple as:
  1. copy bepinex files over to the valheim folder
  2. chuck plugins into <valheim>\bepinex\plugins
  3. run the game once (no need to load a world) and the mods will generate their default configs in <valheim>\bepinex\config

So you might be able to figure it out from that, I can't imagine it'll be all that different on linux. I know the bepinex release on thunderstore (use that, it's specific to valheim) has some .sh files, likely those will be involved. Hopefully someone who mods on linux will see this thread, good luck.
