Do I have to drown?

Going home in my karve. Saw a leviathan. I already have an abyssal harpoon but if I had one more unit of chitin, I could craft an abyssal razor. Stop next to the leviathan, hop on to it from the karve, and set to mining chitin. The leviathan doesn't react until I start whcking away at the second barnacle. (What are you doing, chowderhead? You only needed one stinking unit of chitin.) Get back to my karve to find it still afloat. Capsized, mind you, but still afloat. Jumped on the karve's over turned hull, but the leviathan's last thrashings as it submerges complete the karve's destruction.

it is daylight, the sea is calm, and I'm floating with all my gear. As long as I simply float, I lose no stamina. As long as I have stamina, I lose no health. So I start swimming to the closest landfall. When I swim I burn through stamina. So I stop just short of exhaustion. I don'y lose stamina when I float but I don't regain any either. Drink a minor stamina mead I have and all my stamina is restored. Swim to the point of total exhaustion again and stop to float.

The sea is still calm and it is still daylight but I will start drowning if I swim another stroke. I've covered maybe a tenth of the distance to shore. I could have floated to see what would happen if it started raining or a storm blew up or if a serpent wandered by but I got impatient and drowned myself.

What if I trained up my swimming skill, got more and better stamina meads and other foods?
Perhaps, I could discover the Viking equivalent of swimming the English Channel.

What actually happened? I respawned at home, grabbed a hammer, enough wood, leather scraps and resin to build a raft, ate some food and went on a naked corpse run to recover my stuff. By that time night had fallen.

Died from drowning because I was a chowderhead, and made an equally chowderheaded attempt to recover my body and gear. Odin must have a soft spot for chowderheads. I made it without seeing so much as a drop of rain or a single neck.

Don't try this at home.

Moral to the story: Chowderhead, not even once

Logging in/out to restore stamina is 'mechanic abuse.'

Spawning in a ship/flying home with Dev commands is 'cheating.'

It's perhaps a fine line - but sometimes people don't want to cross that line.

Edit - just to note that I'll use the log in/out to move metal around if it's too far from home to sail or I don't have time to do so.

The best way when having a situation like you described, stranded in the middle of the ocean is by logout and login into the new or another world then stash all your item or whatever you have in your inventory then log back into the world where you are in the middle of ocean then suicide or just swim until you die when you respawn you don't lose anything.

I get that and I can understand that kind of person because sometimes I like to play fair too.
In that case, you can swim until you die than when you respawn you can build another boat to retrieve all your belonging the tombstone will not sink to the bottom of the ocean and it marked on the map so it is possible to retrieve it back without any of those you called as mechanic abuse and cheating.
It just time-consuming and just hope that when you go to retrieve it you're not facing any Serpent on your way.

Ye I tried to not abuse logging in and out for ore, but then I realised in a swamp and up mountains carts are a nightmare to try and use so I'd spend forever walking backwards and forwards, so just decided it was time to accept it.

Log out and back in. You'll log in with full health and stamina. No need to log into another world to recharge....but you could do to eat better foods so your stamina pool is larger.

If you don't mind about skill loss this might actually be a good shout as it sounds like it'll take a lot of logging in and out to get back to shore. But ye if you don't want to lose skills the logging out strat works a dream.
