How my viking keeps his crops and boars safe.
If one is farming or raising boars, one must construct roundpole fences. Keeps the deer from eating the crops. Keeps boars from wandering off.
Roundpole fences, however, provide little in the way of security from greydwarves, trolls, skeletons, draughr, wolves, and drakes which may come calling at one's base to beat out a viking's brains. Crops and boars quickly become collateral damage, especially if a viking is on one side of a pen or field and the gentlemen callers are on the other.
A viking could build walls and moats to protect his boar and crops. Mine is too lazy. Instead, he relies on location.
He puts his pens and fields far enough from his base to be outside raid range, that red circle appearing on the map during a raid. Mobs are pretty much single-minded: kill vikings. They don't wander across the countryside seeking out a viking's boar and crops.
If one stays in one's base and the red-tinted raid area throughout the raid, one's boar and crops will be untouched. Fight the mobs one can kill and dodge those one cannot until the raid timer runs out.
My viking also keeps his walled base fairly compact. He leaves plenty of room in the red circle to move around so that his structures don't take too much collateral damage from the mobs' near misses.
Should survival dictate leaving the raid's red circle, a prudent viking chooses a direction that does not lead to his fields and pens.
Yes, a viking must travel a couple of hundred meters to plant or harvest crops and to feed or slaughter boar. My viking would rather do that than worry about the safety of his boar and crops.

[h]Updated information[/h]
It happened! I was standing by my bed in my base preparing to sleep. The phone rang and I had to answer it. I failed to log out. While I was on the phone "The Ground Is Shaking."
Six or seven minutes later when I got back to my PC, I was standing in the circle of boss stones with a rag tunic and nothing else.
Ran back to my base, got the trolls to chase me around it until the raid expired and then led them off to the woods to lose them. Returned to and repaired my base.
Then I went to see my field and my boar pen. My crops were ready to harvest. My boar were, well, happier than pigs in sh*t. Where I had two boar and two piggies, I now had seven boar.
Minimal effort and my crops and livestock came through untouched.

Why roundpole fences? I always use stakewall for boar pens, so that the boars can't see through the fence (and it's stronger than roundpole, too). This pen is inside another stakewalled area, sometimes with a moat as an extra defense.
Crops don't panic or need to be tamed so I use roundpole for them. They are also inside the bigger stakewalled (and moated) area, of course.
Never had boars or crops destroyed by raids. The worst that has ever happened is a troll breaking a single gate in the outer stakewall.

I just build a double-thick castle wall around my buildings and put the animals inside. I do have to use some round pole fence to keep the boars from getting near any fire, but otherwise, they don't even get excited during any raids.
Of course, your idea works very well as well. I have one castle that I had to move my boar a longer distance away, and they're just in some round pole fence. I moved them because the castle is half in plains, and the deathsquito were a problem, as were the fuling if one got in somehow.

if you are scared of attacks... Dig a big hole in the ground and make a roof above the hole.
Next put your tamed animals down there where nobody can see them.
Then they are safe.
But in general i never had issues with building a tall fence arround example the pigs and an outher wall arround my base. Alternative div a trench in front of your fence then the enemy will not get across ( except the trolls )

so my boar pen usually covers the area of 1 crafting table, i level it out as much as possible and build a gate airlock (for new tames and to section out boars when needed.)
around this area, i build crafting bench huts to keep spawns from coming around as often. these are often far enough away i also put torches or some other form of fire at them. this way if a boar gets out it'll run away from it and make noise. (usually back to the pen.)
and at the boarder of THAT ring of benches, i do wooden stake pain walls. with short wall behind them, just something to keep myself from bumping into them.
a pen this size can contain a good amount of boars and if you wish, make a great sized crop area as well. and the pain wall maintains itself as long as it kills greylings and the wood is collected.
