the cage seems to be a transparent texture on a solid object. Nothing goes through it that I know of.

I don't know, but my pig farm is underneath the Elders platform. They are immune to all attack, and generations of them have never seen the sky. They eat better than most humans in history though, so they don't seem to mind.

I think so? I have done this. But I also added a darkwood hatched roof as well. Mine is also bordering plains. It keeps the skeeter at bay.
