The distant graphics are some of the best I've seen in any video game. The lighting and atmosphere is top notch, until you get up close to something and your back in the PlayStation era

This remind me how the new generation used to Skyrim then Oblivion, could not play Morrowind, even with HD mods, as they found it ugly and unplayable. Even before, some players were fast at installing mods to have "better" faces (read: less stylized, more human-like, with "vibrant" colours and make-up) and "better" bodies (read; boobs for everyone, even catlike and snakelike people). It is as if some of us have difficulties to venture outside of their comfort zone, and immerse into an alien graphical universe, be it an excuse to save resources in open-world games, a lack in dev skil, or a genuine artistical design choice.

Borderland Beta was (photo)realistic. It was very casual so the developer decided to use cellshader and this decision made it a legend.
If Valheim would be (photo)realistic i had not bought the game, i hate photorealistic games, nothing looks worse than that!
VAlheim is already legend because its NOT photorealistic - because it has its own charme with current artstyle!

I find the graphics extremely satisfactory and think they did a hecuva job on water in this game. There are very few games that incorporate elements of land & sea gameplay as seamlessly as the developers of Valheim have.

The thing that gets me is that, personally, I actually would call the graphics "top notch". The game has a gorgeous blend of PS1-era models and textures with modern lighting, particle effects and render distance. It has an incredibly unique aesthetic and its extremely charming; downright beautiful in some instances. Photo-realism is hard to execute well and inevitably ages and looks lousy after newer, even MOAR realistic-looking games come out. Stylised visuals have their place and can look just as good or even better than photo-realism and age far more gracefully with time.

They've chosen a certain look and style and it isn't going to change significantly. If you think the graphics aren't good I would bet that you haven't stopped in the Black Forest and looked around as sunlight filters through the trees, or looked up on a clear night to see the stars, clouds, and Yggdrasil, or that you've never taken a moment to appreciate the look, feel, and sound while you're sailing in a storm. Look beyond the textures, you'll see a lot of beauty.

For me graphics in Valheim beat a lot of modern graphics games. Its atmosphere quickly lets me forget about giant pixels everywhere. Lighting, shadows, fog, forests, all the stuff just makes up for the pixel deficiencies. For me to get so much effect with all the pixelated stuff everywhere is just masterwork, a form of art.

It's likely an artistic choice, not an inferior visual compromise that needs to be "upgraded". Not every game needs to be 4K photo-realistic. Higher fidelity =/= "better" graphics.

Go use an HD mod.

Its not that crazy to want HD textures when pretty much the only part of the graphics that are low fidelity. Its not like expecting roblox to be hyper realistic like console AAA releases. That said if it costs performance I prefer the weird pixels. With that mod existing im not sure there is a point outside maybe visuals improvements to depth buffer and the weird tree thing in sky.
