Loot in my chest has completely gone

Dear all,

I build some chest inside my house and put loot inside. Right now, I came back and one of the chest is completly empty. Any ideas???

I play current version incl. valheim plus on a online server.

Sure but not everyone is in control who plays on a server and not all servers are set up the same.

I run my own dedicated Valheim servers. I only reboot them once a week and it always saves the world state before shutting down so simple server reboot wont make items lost.
Client has it's own save, your character and it's inventory. Rest is saved in world save that can be on server or your own computer for single player.
I also run ARK servers and only time we lost some items was when we had to revert to older save due a unfortunate fail on updating a mod that totaled our world. So that was a "reset" to previous state of world.
If some one is "resetting" their Valheim world to some previous save state once a day, no idea why the heck.

My guess is that people who encounter issues like this are playing on dedicated servers that do not save just before rebooting.. at that point it would just rely on the last world save the game did so at most lose 20min since I thing the game saves every 20 mins now. The server I played on most would shut down twice a day at 2AM and 2PM regardless if people were on it or not. Just a forced disconnect.

At least in my testing that is how it seemed to work on the server I played on, but all of that stuff is on the server admin to set up.

If you do have stuff vanishing or duplicating then asking the admin when the server gets restarted/reset for the day/week/month should let you know if that is indeed the issue as the problem would happen around those times. Should be easy enough in ops case to verify that.

edit add- Oh nice, OP sorted it out with how they run the server so all good.

Talk to server admin and ask when server gets reset. Reset normally should be done daily to keep server running smooth. Admin can set times and how often, the server I played on did it twice a day.

Basically the game makes a save independent of the server save.
Anything you do between the game save and server reset gets lost.

So if you put items in a chest you lose them.
If you take items out of a chest you duplicate them.
If you harvest a garden they are back.
If you plant a garden they are lost.

So knowing when your online server gets reset and just avoiding playing too close to those times will resolve the issue.
I would typically log out a half hour before reset to avoid issues.

I have to ask; why would a server need to be reset daily?

My friends and I have been playing on a server one of us set up and the only times it has been reset was when Windows update does it's "Screw your unsaved work i'm rebooting NOW" thing every so often. outside of those ocasions we've never had a problem with the server running 24/7 since April without any resets.

First of all, thanx to everybody. My feedback is: No one took the items out, the server is not public. I put scrap inside and it disappeared also. I can restart the server via admin panel whenever I want. Currently I do this right before we play. Since that the problem has gone...

Have a good time....

So you are on a server with others it seems like...

A) Could be a bug with a mod
B) Someone might of stolen your stuff.

That sounds like a bug to me. Is that actually implemented in the server? Why would it make an independent save that it didn't reload after reset, and why wouldn't the server check to see if anyone is online before doing the reset?

My server restarts every night if/when no one is on to check for updates, but I've never heard of server resets.

By reset I meant restart.

The server I played on would just drop you and do the restart.

You even hear of people in an iron crypt for example... logged out at the wrong time and suddenly they get trapped inside because all the blockages got refilled.

I'm just telling you what happens and why. Some people might like the idea of being able to duplicate stuff so it's hard to say if it is a bug considering all the other things you can do with console.

Problem is world progress is saved on server and personal progress is saved on client. Not sure there is any way to prevent this kind of thing unless you lock characters to worlds.

Now, that makes sense. It's not the server doing a separate save, it's that the server is restarting while you're on it and your personal stuff doesn't get saved. I've had that happen with a client-side crash.

Pull something out of a chest, client crashes, item gone. Put something in a chest, server crashes, item gone.

FWIW, you don't need to exploit server restarts to duplicate stuff. You have your own client/server. You can easily copy worlds on your own machine to duplicate as much as you want.

Well like I stated in my first post... just ask server admin when server is set to restart/reset and stop playing about half an hour before that and you should be fine and stay synced without losing anything. Restart only takes a few moments so just join after it gets done its thing.
