Fishing and Farming update

I've been out of the loop for a while (like around 6 months or more)-- have there been any updates to make fishing or farming less tedious? I don't see many threads requesting updates or complaining of the mechanics anymore, but I also don't see anything about any changes in the updates and patches.

Specifically, one of the chief complaints I had, and saw others have, was a high stamina depletion with every seed planted, plant harvested, or meter of fishing line reeled in, meaning that in order to farm food, you had to waste a lot of time standing around, waiting for your stamina to recharge, and in order to fish for food, you HAD to have a decent amount of stamina-boosting food in your belly, anyway, and it was never cost-effective.

The other common complaint was that it was incredibly tedious to have to individually plant every single seed/crop (spacing and all), and to individually harvest every single plant/crop. Attacking plants just destroyed them instead of harvesting them, and you'd frequently waste a lot of field space by not being able to tell the radius of each plant until planting it and seeing them die. Among that problem was the fact that there was no way to destroy just a single, particular plant in order to save the other crowded plants.

So what's the word, folks? Has anything changed? Have people just accepted the farming and fishing mechanics that have always been in place? Have people just figured out workarounds to limit the frustration of these mechanics? Thanks for what news y'all have.

Agreed. This topic sounds very much like it should have originally been posted under "Rant & Rave".

Fishing requires bait on line and fish in water. Be sure to restore your stamina between casts and keep casts short; do this, and you won't have a problem. It's not fast, but fish is a good
ingredient.

I use a pair of mods for farming: One that automatically aligns my planting on a grid and another that allows the hoe to mass harvest and auto-replant. It removes a bunch of the tedium from farm work.

As far as stam use goes, it just gives my boars more time to breed., or if I'm really in a hurry there's that one stam potion that works when you're not in combat. Probably not cost-effective to use often but sometimes I'm in a hurry.

As for fishing... I pretend it doesn't exist.. I'm happier with the game that way. Otherwise I'd have to say something to the devs like, ya wanna do fishing - go look at Runescape FFS. But I'm not saying that, guess maybe some people like the current implementation.

PS: yes I got up on the wrong side of bed this morning.

I actually really like the fishing in this game, most games are like "cast line, x% chance per tick" like magic. This one the fish have to be there, you can over fish an area, and they are actual objects in game prior to being caught.

Much like real fishing you can often see them approach the lure so you know to be ready.

I wish there was MORE to it, and I haven't played ruinscape to know if its better IMO but this games fishing isn't bad at all compared to most games, survival or MMO.

I'd love to tweek it quite a bit, but the core seems fine.

Nothing's changed. I like it that way. :) I just make sure I've eaten some high-stamina food when I am farming/fishing. (Would I like it changed a little and some farming/fishing skill building added to the game? Yes, but I'm not going to hold my breath for that.)

The best tip for fishing I can give is casting out and then reeling back in immediately to about 14 metres away. That way you don't use up so much stamina when you reel the fish in once hooked. And of course only fish where you can *see* fish. Saves on the heartache of waiting for fish to spawn in - negates the need to search for tuna too. :)

i would LOVE if there was a building/farming skill that could be leveled and reduce stamina usage. & if there were an upgraded metal hoe that could plant and harvest multiple seeds.
as for fishing agree with those above. do it from a boat! in fact i made a guide about this awhile ago (shameless self promotion i know) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2600396080

Ha, thanks for the update! Yeah, that's pretty much how I remember dealing with the mechanics before my hiatus, too. But I love fishing in games, so I'd keep slamming my head against that wall over and over, because surely, it can't be as bad as I remember it being? (But it was)

Sounds like the key remains "always make sure everyone else in your multiplayer server splits the burden of farming equally, or else it's going to be miserable for the people who are having to do it all." and also "just don't fish unless you have plenty of food and actually enjoy the mechanic."

Sigh...

I use longs plots to farm. I'll get my rested bonus and eat 3 stamina foods (typically muckshake, turnip soup, and onion soup). If you start 1 meter away from the front and side edges of your cultivated spot the first plant will stay healthy. Then walk forward ready for the next plant. The ghost will remain red until the space is far enough to ensure a healthy plant at which time the ghost will turn green. If you try to plant while the ghost is still red you get a "need cultivated soil" error even though the ground is cultivated. (If you plant walking backwards the ghost turns green immediately and the plants are too close together to remain healthy).

I use 3 planting beds 4 tiles wide by 20 tiles long. At the end of the row I'm just about out of stamina and I walk backwards to the start edge of the bed and my stamina is fully recharged. You can start the next row about 75% of a tile away from the previous row and plant the next row and all plants will be healthy. My 4 x 20 tile beds will support 5 rows of healthy plants and I can plant 300 seeds in about 10 minutes.

For fishing I discovered that you can fish from a boat or raft (Karve seemed to work best for me). You can sail or paddle to a location that has many fish nearby so that you don't have to make a long cast (8-10 meters is enough) and you'll use much less stamina and will be able to bring fish in faster.

I'm usually using stamina food, depending at my current "age" before starting to farm. Also it certainly helps to be rested.
One trick I use to make sure I can plant things in nice staight lines, is setting up a line of round pole fences along my farming plot.
Using the poles as reference when walking forward (or backwards, doesn't matter in this case) makes it quite easy to keep a straight line.

Another trick I use is planting my next row at the next pole, but the third is dropped right in the middle of the first two rows. By doing so, I slowly create a diagonal line of plants, which makes even more effective use of the space I had.

I've also found out that after you don't need them as food anymore, planting certain crops is a waste of time. Even carrots, although you can feed them to boars. So when moving up the food ladder, do the same with your crops. This makes farming life a lot easier.

As for fishing, as said above, use a karve, sail to a nice spot, paddle at the edge of shallow and deep water and cast your line around 10m from your boat at the deep water side. The moment you see a fish moving fast to your bobber, pay attention, as that's usually a Tuna; which provide you with 4 pieces of fish the moment you catch it. Saves you a lot of time and effort, catching those.

Thorin :)
