Some questions from potential buyer.
Hey everyone, I've had this on my radar since it came out but I've been burned on new games with online communities dying immediately after it got popular so I held off until now. It's been a year and it seems like there is a healthy playerbase still so I'm taking a look at Valheim again and I had a few questions if someone could help answer them.
1. What's the point of building a base? Is it just for the satisfaction of creating a base or does it serve a purpose beyond an area to store your items and crafting tables? Can it be attacked by mobs?
2. Is the world infinitely generated similar to something like Minecraft? If so and you wander off into the distance how do you know your way back?
3. What happens if you die? Do you lose what you had on you?
4. How does the game run? I have a Ryzen 1700, GTX 1060 6gb, 32gb of RAM and if need be I can install it on an SSD.
5. What if I built a base and some time down the road I decide to move some place else, how do you move items and materials from one place to another? Do boats have storage on them?
Thanks in advance!

The world generation reminds me of Don't Starve. Although the size may change, the way the biomes get more hostile the further you away from the center is more appearant. World generation is unlike Minecraft or any other procgen game that I know of. Effectively what it's doing is cutting a circle from a larger map of deterministic islands so the geography of every seed will be very similar and in fact often have major landmasses in common. It's all archipelago all the time.
Unless you overwrite it with a custom map of Azeroth or w/e.

1. Yes it can be attacked by mobs, but you can also build defensive walls, trenches and other things to protect them. You can tame creatures in the game and bases can also be thus where you breed more from your tames for resources or fighting/protection. Also for crafting there are certain refining stations as well that need a place. And lastly there is growing crops for food and other resources/crafting.
2. Maps have a finite parameter and you can fall off the edge of the world if not careful. However the maps are huge. You can use the valheim map seed generator to see various worlds and their size, though the map makes it hard to see the scale of them but they are pretty big.
3. Death creates a "tombstone" you can go back and collect your stuff from the tombstone. However dying at sea or in some other spots with lots of mobs may be a challenge to recover, though with patience you should be able to.
4. You can play the game fine how ever if you build/breed too much, just like with most games, the rendering will cause your frames to drop.
5. Boats have storage. There is also a cart a player can pull. Riding a Lox(lizard ox) can also negate weight restrictions. If you play on multiple maps in single player you can also map hop to move things. There are also portals you can make and move all things except raw ore and metal ingots.

1. Bases will give you a „rested buff“. For workbenches/crafting tables you‘ll also need a kind of base around it. Yes there are raid events in that mobs will attack your base if you are inside.
2. It’s not infinite but very big. You csn set markers on a map to help you with orientation.
3. If you die you lose the stuff on you (including armor you wear), but you can get it back (there will be a tombstone with all that stuff where you died). You will also lose 5% of your skills.
4. The specs you mentioned should be sufficient.
5. Yes boats have storage, but not that much, also there are carts. Anyway it will be very time consuming to move an big base, better to build a new one.

1. You need someplace to sleep at night, and some place to craft items, thus your home is considered a base. Yes it can be attacked by mobs, especially during "events" but there is NOTHING that can't be overcome with some common sense & preparation. There is also a build of the month sticky post at the top of the forum.
2. No, the world is something like 314 square kilometres. If you go past the edge of the world you die, nothing recoverable as it should be via norse mythology.
3. A tombstone appears where you died, a skull and cross bones appears on your map and you go get your stuff. This is where that base comes in handy because wise people keep a copy of older armor for just these sorts of emergencies. If you die multiple times in a row they are marked on the map, and you still need to go to that first death to recover your stuff.
4. I think you should be fine
5. Boats do have storage, and carts too. There is also a belt at the trader that helps A LOT with carrying items. You can also use portals to move stuff but you cannot, and never will be able to move ore, or metal bars through them, but if they are crafted into say nails, or an iron re-enforced beam it is ok.
6. A lot of decisions are on purpose about the game (such as the look, no metal through portals), and someone will come and tell you to use mods. Mods cause a lot of bugs in this game that is in an "Alpha" state still, it is not remotely near beta, but you do you and have fun.

1. You need a home so you can set it up with maximum "comfort" from items built. This translates to better rested bonus for better xp gain and stamina regen. Stamina management is important in this game. Better foods made at crafted stations will give better health and stamina benefits. You have a set amount of health and only food will increase it.. it does not go up with level or anything. Finding and making better food is key.
So in that respect a base of some kind is optimal. It gets raided by NPC enemies, very few people have PVP servers going.
2. Seed generates world. It is RNG generated you have a map and mini map. The world has limits to it.. find them if you dare... <seriously avoid.. last warning>
3 Die stuff to tombstone can recollect. Bonus when picked up. All items removed but also returned when tombstone collected. 5% loss on all skills.
4. Got a 1070 and it runs smooth with motion blur off, removed foliage <easier to see stuff anyway> 60fps at 1920x1080 pretty solid. Game looks great on those settings though.
Graphics low settings. Max distance. Motion blur, depth of field off, foliage off anything like bloom off, shadows on minimum.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2591921040
And it looks this incredible... the devs really have done some magic with the tiny install size and performance. Just amazing really.
5. Larger boats have more storage. Frankly there isn't much you would have to transport by boat. I often make many bases in key processing locations for resources. Most of the time you can get what you need locally ore wise to set up an outpost. Then you can use portals you craft and set up to carry non ore/ingots.
Keep in mind this is not an MMO of any sort. The size of the playerbase is not important.
The game is not complete but what is has is fairly well fleshed out. Balance is good for solo as well as group. Max on a server is 10 unless modded. People host their own, there are no "community" servers run by the devs. Most servers are password protected and people play with friends to avoid griefers and thieves.

My main base is awesome in both worlds I play in. I sleep there every night and don't even place beds or things in my outposts. If you manage portals properly and use outposts, you can reach anywhere in the morning and return to base in the evening. Also, building the base is a real blast and having two worlds allows you to share the resources, somewhat alleviating the grind caused by the ore portaling restriction. It's an awesome game, op. Good luck, Viking!

Ah that reminds me of one more thing.
World and character saves are individual. You can use any character created in any world you created. You can have as many worlds and characters as you want. I have over 20 worlds and characters... ended up naming worlds after characters to keep them straight.
Total of all saves <characters, worlds and backups> just over 2 gig.

1. A basic shelter, which consists of a workbench, a fire, a bed, walls and roof will allow you to sleep at night and update your spawn point. I often put up these mini bases around the map as I explore on foot in early game. Note that fires need to be sheltered from the rain and the smoke needs to vent. Later on the raids get tougher and you will have more crafting benches and upgrades which will require better defenses and more room. By then you will have portals.
2. The world is not infinite, although you can have (nearly) infinite worlds. Characters and worlds are saved separately so your character can log in to any world you have active. It is extremely large and it is unlikely you will explore all of it in one playthrough unless you really really want to. Each world is procedurally generated so you will have to explore to find things. (There's also a website that will show you a map if you enter your seed code if you really want to know where something is.) The player has a map with a fog of war and you can mark it when you find resources or put down a base or portal. (One thing that is not like Minecraft is that you can not dig underground, unless you burrow under a rock or other existing structure. The earth will go down to a certain depth but it will not cover your head.)
3. If you die you leave a tombstone with your stuff in it and a mark appears on the map. You will wake up at your last spawn point, which is you most recent bed. If there is no bed you go back to the start location. Keep extra food and supplies handy at your base. You also lose 5% of all your skills, even if that means losing entire levels, however, skills are not as important as equipment and food, so you might not even notice the difference.
4. Should be fine.
5. Portals are your friend. Also buildings can be deconstructed to get back all materials, even if they get damaged in a raid. You'll mostly be limited by the carry weight, and the inability to bring metal through the portal. Some things, like the forge, use ingots as an ingredient, so you'll have to move those by boat or foot, or mine more metal. It's not hard to put up a quick smelter and forge next to a mining vein in the new location if it comes to that. You can also have more than one base set up for mining, farming, etc and portal between them. There isn't much need to move the whole thing.
6. Mods work fine, but I'd recommend looking for ones that have been updated this month because we recently had a big patch. Just play it vanilla first to see if there's anything that really bugs you. Nexus mods with Vortex mod manager works great. Valheim Plus is well supported and has lots of stuff in it. If you don't like those death penalties or that no metal in portals thing, it can take care of that for you. (Just had to put this in there because Paka went there first.)
