Some chunks of terrain reset to default terraform in multiplayer.

Been playing on my buddy's world for a couple weeks now. Go to join him today, and SOME of the terrain is reset to its default state (terraforming undone) ONLY FOR ME.

On his end nothing has changed (or trust me I'd hear about it over our discord call, id be flipping too hahah).

What would cause this?

I've tried terraforming something to maybe trigger it to load in. I've tried hoping through a portal and back.

Tried using a different character. No good.

Restarted the server. Nope.

I did notice there is a hard line between 'chunks' where terraformed meets reset terrain.

Here is a screenshot of the chunk line:

Maybe there's a command I can use to force a chunk reload? It's like annoying, because it's just in the very main portion of our base HAH.

Cheers

It sucks when stuff like this happens, lost well over 150+ hours on our server from the world destroyer bug way back when. Doesn't really fix anything now, but I recommend doing a manual backup after you have performed a large amount of work. Enable view hidden items, Users>Username>AppData>LocalLow>IronGate. You'll find the Valheim save folder here and can make backups of both your world and character files.

Why is the .old save only FIVE minutes old? DO NOT TERRAFORM.
Like I get that it's something, but 5 minutes accounts for almost no changes in the scope of an 8 hour gaming session for example.

Just had a thing where our world bugged out and all the terrain reset to default position. While googling about it, found someone mentioning how there is a '.old' backup save... go to check for it, its only 5 minutes before the most recent save so not sure how that helps.

I'm so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ annoyed that our 100+ hours of progress is just ruined from this issue.

So yeah I recommend not relying on terraforming as a functioning factor to your bases. Could just reset one day :D

Don't rely on terraforming.
Me and my friend played the game together.

We put about 100-150 hours each into our base over the past few weeks. Today all of our terrain reset to its default position. Well, the terrain in the base at least (HOW CONVENIENT).

We had finally gotten past dealing with invasions. (tucked workbenches into the terrain all over the base).

I just cant.

Terraforming is such a great feature. But until you experience this... iunno man. Is it worth it?

Sure you could make bases that don't rely on terraforming. But I love the idea of shaping the area around your plans. Like digging a longhouse into the side of a hill. Or just basic flattening and shaping of paths/roads around your base, etc. Like its not as if we dug out a giant football field out of a mountain. It was all pretty tame digging. But after time, it all adds up.

Sorry I wasn't super clear in the main post... but yeah our base had a lot of terraforming involved. Like digging out the side of a hill for a nice longhouse, and overall just shaping the area for roads and whatnot. Flattening some areas for buildings to be placed (not extreme like 100m deep digs, but still something).

So yeah, all that terraforming suddenly reverted today, thus burying most of our base half into the ground.

option 1: backups
option 2: https://www.nexusmods.com/valheim/mods/415?tab=description (mod that modifies the heightmap instead of relying on the terrain modifier objects that i assume got reset here)

The game creates backups by default... come to learn its a 5 minute difference in time though.

And while your suggestion is great for new players who will read this post (unlikely), not sure how that helps someone who assumed the game was stable enough. And not even assumed, it was just natural to not think the game would hit back with an issue like this. Sure I expected some minor bugs like a mob stuck in the ground every 50 hours or so.

And honestly haven't experienced any single bugs until this one. The only glitch/bug I'd seen in 200 hours to this point, was a boar shifted into the ground for a few seconds.

Also that mod linked has a bunch of warnings on it. Out of principal alone I'd likely stray from it. Not to mention ideally the game should function without the need for it.

Yes, there are mods encouraged for quality of life (like auto fueling torches, planting grid, more build rotations, etc), but to need a mod to fix a game breaking bug is a whole other story.

A bug like this should be informed to the community and the devs. Not bandaged in a back alley word of mouth mod page.

The game saves on each periodic world save, on disconnection, and also (presumably) on death. Now, you know what to expect from those save files. The .old save is only the previous save. It can well be 5 minutes old if you disconnect 5 minutes after a world save.

If you manually copy those save files elsewhere, when you can restore a much older game state, in case of a reset.

Yeah now I know... :( Would have been nice to know before. I've just never needed backups in a game before. Not unless the game loaded up with a warning saying as such "Hey this game is unstable and may crash or corrupt, please make backups of your save". I've seen games share such warnings, but Valheim doesn't. I DO realize it is still in Early Access, but given how stable the game usually is, I was under the impression the game was just that... stable under normal circumstances. You'd think making use of the hoe or pick axe is normal circumstance.

Ouch. One of the prices of playing Early Access games, I suppose.
Terraformed terrain in No Man's Sky *still* does that for players sometimes.

WELL. Now the terrain is bugged for both of us. Which I'm sure means the world is saved as such now.

150 hours gone.

Yep. All the work we put into the world are now null and void. I logged on and all the terrain was reset for me, all of our boars now roaming free out of their pen because they can just walk up a hill that shouldnt be there and walk over the fence. Garden ruined. Buildings filled in with land that should be levelled. Game breaking issue in my opinion, and really kills any motivation for playing this game anymore.

Is it an old draugr village? I've had that problem a couple of times now, and always in those.
