You know what you should do? Just buy DST and Valheim. Give them a go for about an hour, and see which one gives you a sense of fulfilment more. Whether you choose one or the other, or both to refund at the end, the thing is, both games will still be here at a later date during Steam sales.

The only wrong choice here, is if you feel pressured into buying something and keeping it, even if you won't enjoy it.

I have both Don't Stave Together (DST) and Valheim, they're both fundamentally different games.

Yes the premise may be the say, Loot Build Survive, but they run entirely different regardless of the aspect you play in, 3D vs 2D.

In DST, it's a permanent ongoing play. There's no pausing, there's no saving and coming back later as it was, and in most cases death is absolute. In some servers the played DAYS reach 500(Ingame)Days, which is something like 3weeks of continuous nonstop play from the Players. Also your Character is tied to that Server. You cannot AFK as you could starve to death.

In Valheim, it's mostly solo play, and you can come and go as you please. There aren't really Community Servers, as most people play privately with friends to prevent griefing from bad-apples looking to steal your hard fought goods and ruin your hard work. Valheim is more like a Casual Dark Souls. Items are mostly easily replaceable and it's very easy to have a surplus when playing with friends. Your character is free to Server hop. You can AFK if you know how.

Valheim has one of the best randomly generated beautiful worlds ever made. Big plus for me.

I did NOT like don't starve.

If you like survival sandbox games.
I highly recommend Don't Starve Together.

I won't go into boring details since it is Valheim forum not DST forum.
But the game is packed to the brim with content and is still updated with more to the point it can get overwhelming.

As for which is better? Well i'll let others answer that one.

Don't Starve Together

I thought i made that clear hmm

The games are totally different in approach, Dont Starve is a harsh survivial game but on a 2D plane, with more on gathering resources, Valheim is a 3D game with more emphasis on staking your place in the world.
Both can be enjoyed solo with no issues, both have MP options for those who want it.
Valheim does the more enjoyable combat, though it is still basic but it feels better.

I think both are worth your consideration, if I was to be pushed on one or the other, and I have no experience in either game, I would say Dont Starve for now, its a done project but Valheim has a lot to keep you going despite not being completed... I dont play a game for 200+ hours for nothing.

I say if you can afford it, try both but if its a one or the other... Dont Starve is done, but has DLC you may want to buy that increases the costs, or just get Valheim which at the moment is pay now and get virtually all of the game (Odin pre-order is the exception).

Generally i'd suggest Don't Starve Together over Don't Starve if you decide to pick it.
Don't Starve Together is more polished than Don't Starve and has quite few improvements and changes towards game mechanics.

Don't Starve (the single player) is only worth it for Shipwrecked and Hamlet but DST has mods that do a pretty good job at porting content from these DLCs

As for staking your place in the world well that's Don't Starve Together in a nutshell aswell :P

I have both. Having experienced Don't Starve, I assume DST is the same or similar. So based on that, I would surmise both are good. So it comes down to these things:

Valheim:
- Still in Early Access
- Was posted as EA in Febuary 2021
- Is in full 3D, not optimised
- Enough bugs that will need to be hashed out over time
- Balancing issues that will be hashed out as small updates over time
- Still lots to do before it fills in their road map concepts
- A few empty biomes at this moment in time
- Not all bosses are in the game
- Not stable for everyone

DST:
- Left Early Access in April 2016, which is over 5 years ago
- Has a lot of content through many patches over the years
- Is in 2D-ish, fully optimised
- Most bugs has been hashed out
- Balanced quite a bit already
- Devs still update the game

Both games can play multiplayer. So it's really a matter of what you prefer in style and what exactly you prefer in content. DST has a lot of substance because it's a finished product released over 5 years ago. Valheim is still an infant, that has a lot of growing up to do. However, Valheim can still be pretty fun, when it works for you.

Objectively, I would suggest DST for substance. I would suggest Valheim, if you want ambient beauty and a visual sense of achievement. However, unlike DST, Valheim *might* give you headaches coinciding crashes, FPS drops, visual incompatibilities, Linux-based server updates, etc.

Mind you, I've clocked about 370 hours with Valheim. Where as I have clocked only 5.9 hours with Don't Starve and haven't touched DST yet.

Damn, you seem to really like Valheim, that's alot of hours!

dont starve together.

its a real and full finished game.
devs and community are both supporting each other and made a great game.
its alot deeper mechanics and has more content
its less grindy and alot more rewarding.


if you dont like smart games and just want to play with brain off get valheim
