Multiplayer Lag
Yeah the desync makes this game unplayable. I've read there reasoning behind it but, it's bull. anytime more than 1 of us are around our base the lag gets horrible. We've mixed and matched our group being online at the same time and it never fails if more than 1 is on. We are on a dedicated server

Can confirm / it works. [...]
Obviously you do this at your own risk, so back up your save data.

Edit: Oh, not sure if this makes a difference or not, but I also change the priority for the server run at "above normal" (set in Windows Task Manager)
Sure it doesn't solve the core problem, but it helped our group a lot.
For the core problem the devs have to rewrite the code from the scratch, because they use an p2p-driven server model in their code.
Read the page exactly and all the comments there to understand the problem correctly before changing anything.
With everything the devs add, more data needs to be send and the problem will get worse every update if the code doesn't change. Sadly.

Had this issue in multiplayer as well. I run the dedicated server on my PC that I'm playing on and others connect to it. My wife and I would play and if we both were in our main base opening chests, doors, etc. just didn't work.
There is a bit of a hack work around that people have come up with.
TL;DR:
It involves modifying the server and game .dll files to increase the data transfer limit between client and server. Currently it is capped a specific number which is too small to cope.
I modified the files for the server and clinet on my pc as well as the client on hers and now we can play without issue. Took about 15m to read how to do it, get the software for editing and modify the files.

Not sure it'll ever get fixed. Our game became unplayable at times. Had 5 guys in a server. Definitely brings down the desire to play.

1 player in an area = you are the host of the chunks you are in even if the "server" is a different machine on the other side of the planet
2 players in an area = the client who entered the area first is the host and this isnt necessarily you
